What we are - are the sum total of as our experiences. And each one is an essential part of our being - from here we can only grow to be the best version of ourselves. And make new friends ds along the journey.

Forgive me for my silliness. I don't write poetry, but you, my friend, made me do it.

Once, I was young, but life was not grand
Until I told myself to take a stand
Emptiness was the name of the game
Not wealth, happiness, or fame

With paper and pen, I found my life
Even though I was a mother and wife
Words formed in my head and heart
It allowed me to breathe from the start

The more I wrote, the happier I grew
Finding the joy I never knew
Then, I was blessed by a unique site
Where friends enjoyed when I would write

Friendships formed for which I was glad
Tragedy swirled, which made me so sad
Gulping for air, fighting to live
I am thankful I had friends eager to give

Though FanStory has its problems, too
I've been blessed with people ...especially you.
Without their support and being kind
I'm sure darkness would have taken my mind

So, today, I am stronger with hopes for tomorrow
Blessed by those who saw through my sorrow
It's friends like yourself and a few more
Who lift my spirits and make them soar

I have no idea why I wrote this poem
Except in my heart, I give you a home
I'll greet you always with a cheerful smile
A basket of hugs, because that's my style

Once, I was young, in darkness, I lived
Now I am old, and my friendship I give

My poem for the year...LOL
Love ya, Carol

As we live life, when we are young, we often want to have things that we dream of, we want to do things that we dream of. As we age we find sometimes those dreams do not come true, but other things do come true and take their place. It is so nice to be here on fan story And have friends that can encourage us. Patricia.

I enjoyed the repetition of your verse, the nostalgic reflection on youthful activities. Times can change but some things remain constant. True friends is one. Nicely done, Cecilia. Take care Debbie

That is how life goes. Once we were young, and now we're old. But what an amazing family of friends we have found on Fanstory, Celilia. We will never be friendless while we are here. I enjoyed this poem, my friend. Warmes hugs, Sandra xxx
Have a wonderful Christmas and a healthy, happy 2025 xxx

Nicely done, Cecilia. I like this Once I Was prompt. Thanks for sharing this. Is the piece really autobiographical? Feel free to reach back, if you care to. The bit about the sailing caught me. It could be literal or figurative.

    Trina,

Yes this really is autobiographical. I was in the US Navy where I literally grew up. I joined at 19 and got out when I was 36.

    I appreciate your wonderful review.

I like the theme of your poem and the way you have shown your life although I think you might rearrange your poem a bit. Reverse the first two stanzas. Riding your bike implies you were younger than staying out at night. I might suggest you change the bike line to "Riding my bike, all over I'd roam. Hope you don't mind my suggestions, but they seemed to fit your poem.
