It's even sadder when the days meant to be filled with joy, love, and peace tend to be smudged with sorrow, bitterness, and misfortune, especially for children who are supposed to be filled with the imagination and magic of Christmas. I am sorry you experienced the sadness but glad that other years were filled with better times.

My brother (4 years older than me) ruined Christmas for me when I was 5 years old. He told me to look down the air register, and I would see Santa. Instead, I saw my parents putting presents under the tree. I remember how cruel his laugh was when I started to cry.

Thank you for sharing your story. I like how you spoke of how Christmas is celebrated in Spain. It sounds like how it should be.
Smiles, Carol

Well written entry for the contest. Children often learn some realities of life that can be painful, and those are the ones that last a lifetime. I am happy that it turned out positive for you and your family after that one Christmas disappointment. We also find great reward in giving those special gifts to others, those gifts we were not able to have as a children.

Gypsy,
This is such a sad story. I hope you look to all the Christmases past and present for comfort.

My 8th Christmas was the worst when I found out there was no Santa. And when my fiancé died 4 days before Christmas in 1995.

Whenever I was hospitalized my mom and dad always too me home for a break for the holidays.
I guess I have good and bad memories too Gypsy.
I hope you have a nice Christmas this year and always,
Cindy

I think this is one the saddest stories I've ever read, but it's a great tribute to the optimism of children, I fouled out that my father was Santa Claus when I caught him tip toeing into my bedroom with a pillow case of toys, somehow it didn't mean the same after that, beautifully written Gypsy, blessings Roy,

I really like the idea of Epiphany gifts. That way kids get presents just as the wise men gave presents to the Baby Jesus. I don't like the idea of people giving extravagant presents to each other and not remembering Christ's birth. I know you have shared part of this story in a haibun before. I like your flash true story. Best wishes in the contest!
Suggestion:
been one of the worse ones for my family. (been one of the worst for my family)

Thank you very much, big sister ❤️ 😘 🙏 I'm happy you like it.

I fixed the error. I kept going back and forth. Worst sounded better but I thought is "one of many". English doesn't make sense to me sometimes. LoL

    Love

This is so sad and obviously had a huge impact on you at just 4 years old. I'm so pleased that things got better after your father obtained work again. I must admit I rather prefer the Spanish way of having Christmas rather than the intensive celebrations over 3 consecutive days in the UK. All too much for me! And why do adults have to have gifts? Good luck! and warm wishes Debbie

Thank you very much, Debbie. I didn't know you celebrate three days of Christmas in the UK.

It's just Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and Boxing Day. Originally, Boxing Day was when the 'boxes' (presents) were opened. Now, it's generally Christmas Day. But all 3 days are celebrated.

What a sad read, though I am so glad that things turned around for you and your family, your story makes me think of and feel for all those children around the world who are unable to celebrate Christmas, very well written, best wishes for your contest****kahpot
