I think your poem reminds us to be careful what we wish more and our routine can be something we rely on, rather than be bored by. Looking at our daily chores with renewed and fresh eyes can make the day more special.
We can rely on the sun rising and the night drawing in, the seasons come and go and life goes on, I enjoyed your unusual and inventive post, love Dolly x x x

Thanks for the excellent review and your perspective on the piece. I am glad you picked up on this idea of appreciating the little, overlooked moments in our daily routine that we usually ignore. And there is always the morning after in this world and life, something I discovered more than once myself. Hope springs eternal, even in the long monotonous stretches. estory

Thank you so much for your poem and for awakening memories of where I learned to swim at my grandma's house on Sheepshead Bay. It's been over 60 years since I've been there (and Ebinger's Bakery!), but I remember how it was so peaceful compared to the bustling city. Well done!

Thanks for the excellent review and your little memory that the poem evoked for you. I was born in Brooklyn, in Bedford Stuyvesant, Bushwick, and my grandfather used to go fishing in Sheepshead Bay. It is an oasis of calm maybe, in the chaos of NYC. estory

I think you spelled out the daily grind that we all go through each day. When I was in New York in Times square, you could see this hustle and bustle to the max.

Thanks for the excellent review and your little memory of NY evoked by the piece. Yes, it is the city that never sleeps. I once came back to NYC at midnight from down south and the roads were bumper to bumper. estory

A lovely reflective poem, Estory. And your notes are just as poetic. Now I wish I could hear your pronunciation of the words as you probably say words different from your part of the country. There's a bit of melancholy as the weekend is "swept up from the gutters" but there's also that hope in the faithful pulse of the never-sleeping city.

Thanks for the excellent review and your colorful review. You picked up on that 'weekend swept up from the gutters' image. There is a sense of debauchery we sometimes get caught in being forgotten or forgiven in this life. We can always start over, go watch the sunrise on Sheepshead Bay, and take a moment to contemplate the little precious moments in the long monotony of the weekday grind. Listen to the songs on the radio on the way to work, or glimpse the sunlight sparkling on the high rises in a moment of hope. estory

You have a poet's view of the world, Estory! 💞

I guess I have been writing so long that it has rubbed off on me LOL estory

Hi Estory, I read your notes first because I always find them very helpful and interesting. I've never been to New York but have obviously heard so much about "the city that never sleeps."
Your free verse has good fluency and paints a vivid picture of city life. The problem for me was that, after my anticipation about bring introduced to NYC, I found that I could have been reading about any city (bar the above phrase and reference to Sheepshead Bay). I would love there to have been included iconic buildings or streets. So I didn't get the excitement of NYC but I did enjoy the last 2 lines of the first stanza and the general theme of your verse. Thank you for sharing Debbie

Thanks so much for the excellent review and your perspective on the piece. There's little pieces of New York here, Sheepshead Bay any New Yorker would recognize, but I did kind of want this to feel like any city, in some way. The world of commuters can be lived in Paris or London, Hong Kong or Mumbai. I think it's good more people can relate to the images that way. estory

This poem, The Morning After, seems to bring with it the constant hope that the next day will present yet another opportunity to start again. As long as the planet revolves, our chances stay good.

Thanks for the excellent review and your words framing the theme here. There is always the morning after, in this world and life, as I have discovered more than once myself. Hope springs eternal, and that sunrise on the way to work in the daily grind can seem like an oasis on the long highway of life. estory

The final two lines of stanza one are interesting in their imagery of our worldly weekends-coupled with the first two lines of the final stanza - interesting

I didn't really see a lot of celebrating in this poem. It was mostly about relentless grind where nothing much seems to change. Still, it a good poem and we humans are comfortable with things staying the same. A time comes when there will be change and we balk against it.

Thanks for the excellent review and your perspective on the piece. The daily grind can get monotonous sometimes, and the weekend can end in a hangover, but there is always the morning after, there is always that sunrise on Sheepshead Bay that can bring hope. There are always those little moments like listening to the radio on the way to work and catching a song, or a glimpse of the light on the highrises in the morning. estory

Every day, but I wait whether I've had a very good night of sleep or one that was very troubled. I always look at it as being a day of hope and knowing that things could change this very day. I enjoyed your poem very much and I wish you the very best for your day. Also, wish you a very merry Christmas. Patricia.

Each day is a new beginning, yet some things remain the same. I used to tell my first graders, before I retired, that each day was a fresh start. So, whatever happened the day before is forgotten. It seemed to help my more behaviorally challenged students. Thank you for sharing this poem with us. I enjoyed reading.
