Ah! that is a bit harsh .But then it depends on individual perspective and experience. Now that the divorce papers are signed the persona feels free .
I agree with the sentiments of the first two lines.

    Thanks, Sanku.
The poem is pure imagination, but I'm sure holds true for some. In fact several reviewers have confirmed that. As for me, I have been happily married for fifty years!

Fantastic poem. I've been chained, oh, how I've been chained! These few words capture the freedom that is felt from breaking such negative bonds. This equally relates to men and women imo. At the same time there is a dark humor to this that I thoroughly enjoy. Well done, great 5-7-5

Thank you, Rene. Several reviewers have confirmed the portrayal is accurate - it is not my tale as I have been happily married for many years. And yes, the humour derives from that last line. That was a Eureka moment to discover that the seriousness of the first two lines needed to be turned on its head.

I feel you.
:)
I sacked my wife 20 years ago, life is so much quieter and easier since that day. And there are always friends for company.
Good luck and enjoy freedom
Tim

Thanks, Tim. You obviously didn't read my notes! This is not my own experience, but simply empathy for people like you.

Just celebrated fifty years of marriage. Not all blissful, but certainly not chains either.

    Hahaha
Guilty as charged. I have so often missed the little after notes. I really must slap myself for the oversite.
    But
Massive congratulations on the big Five-O
That is an amazing thing to see in this day and age.

There are a lot of things that I like about this poignant little poem but I particularly like the structure. The way the last line itself breaks free from the rest of the poem is clever and a very skillful choice to include. Wonderful piece!

    Hi and welcome to FanStory...
Strangely enough I'd had a version of the first two lines in my head for a week or so. Try as I might I couldn't come up with a third line that was suitably wise and philosophical to make an impact. So yes, that final line was a sudden inspiration which changes the whole tangent of the poem. Thank you for noticing that - the only reviewer to make that insightful comment.

I'm glad you had the inspiration you did :). It's always the best feeling to have that moment of a poem finally coming together. Happy writing!

This is an interesting perspective that I understand too well. There is a lot of truth in it. After two divorces, I feel blessed to be free. Thank you very much.

Very true, when we find ourselves restricted by life we learn to know what freedom feels like and a failed marriage is a good example here, a clever choice of words Steve, love Dolly x

This post indicates the writer has a definite message to say about how contrasts in life help us know the better experience. How do we know sweet without the bitter, the pleasure without pain? Nice job, good luck in that contest!

Yes, like most poems this has a wider message than the explicit one.

Excellent, yes, some do have this opinion about marriage, and I do know a few that were so happy when the chains were finally broken (divorce), very well written and presented, best wishes for your contest****kahpot

Oh my! What a statement! I hope the perception of the chains were mutual. Sometimes just one side feels being trapped. A story well told in just a 5-7-5 poem!

    Thank you.
Yes, I guess the perception could be one-sided...
