Go Fran, go Fran, go Fran!
She is a tough no nonsense law enforcement officer. This became evident last book with Brian.
Now for some reason I'm suspect at this dinner with Dana. Probably just my mind thinking forward.
Great chapter in which I can't wait to see how it shakes out.
One small point (and again probably just me)-
You wrote-
I was wearing a jacket that advertised an appliance repair company, and I carried a toolbox,
Later you write-
I had brought a laptop with me
Something's stick out to me. Where did the laptop come from?
Cheers my friend,
John

Thanks, John. I didn't really think about that point with the laptop, but how's this? She put all the USB cables in the toolbox and carried the laptop beneath her jacket? Does that work? I think I'll mention that. Thanks!
-
Certainly. I think the laptop should be mentioned.
Your call as you see fit.

What I find astonishing about your writing is the vast array of knowledge you have in many fields. I feel as if you could be a mental MacGyver the way you develop simple shallow depths into deep ravines.

Well, let's put it like this: I know how to look up information. I don't really know that much myself--just enough to ask the right questions, but I thank you for the compliment, Tom.
The best resource I have is the AI bot, Poe.com. Far superior and faster than Google searches for information. You can ask it very specific and detailed questions, and get the exact answer you're looking for in just seconds. If you need further elaboration, just ask it another question and it retains everything you've been discussing in the chat so you don't have to repeat it all, and it will elaborate for you. It's really quite amazing and a very useful tool.

Had to get the golf simulator into the picture, huh Jim:-)
I know this is fiction, but I also know that there are "Kevins" out there who would bring their country to a standstill so that they can drive a Porsche and have a golf simulator in their home. I don't understand that.
Again, Lou is an angel and the kind of boss I would have loved to have.
See you next time, Jim.

I think Lou realizes what an outstanding agent Fran is and knew she would get on the case, but for the sake of the IA guys had to come down hard on her with the suspension.
Perhaps Kevin never thought through all the ramifications of what that drug might do if it got out, but it probably wouldn't have mattered to him anyway. Some people are just like that, as you point out.
-
Jim, I love the way you talk about your characters as if they are real and you simply relate what is going on with them. I do the same thing, lol!
-
That's funny, but so true. Elise and I discuss them all the time. When I read over the rough draft to her, she might say, "No, Julia would never say that... " and cite some reason why not, then I'll say, "Yes, she would. Remember when she...". Then we'll argue about it some more. They take on real identities for us.

Easy-peasy.
Yes, I use the same 4 digits for everything. Except the 4th digit morphs to a special character, changing whenever the app or program gets fickle and forces me to change my password.
I also have an Excel spreadsheet with logins, passwords, and account numbers in the desk drawer. It's a good thing I'm poor enough not to have anything worth stealing.
Best wishes.

The method I described is what I do now. I didn't always, but kept a file card box of user IDs and passwords. But I found that wasn't always helpful if I was out of the house and using my phone for one of those sites, so I began employing this scheme. Like I said, not the most secure, but oh well!
-
As I said, I use Excel. Then I take a picture of it with my phone. Several times (we travel a lot) I've had to refer to the photo.
Also, It update it regularly and take a new photo.

Good system.

I liked how you gave all the technical details of how Fran was able to get the evidence. However, of you break into a house, doesn't it show evidence that it was broken into?
I'm concerned about Fran visiting Dana. I almost wished she'd meet with Dana after she hands her boss the evidence.

I wasn't sure how people would respond to all the technical details. I had to cut it down quite a bit in the editing with the help of Elise, as it was a bit too much. Glad it didn't overwhelm because it's not that important a part of the story.
Yes, locks can show evidence of being picked if you're not careful while doing it, but I'm sure Fran would have been careful. Lou will find another way, now that he knows it was Kevin, to nail him. For example, they may discover his offshore accounts where he received a large influx of cash. Or they'll get Brittany to rat on him to save herself. Then they'll get a warrant and examine his computer and find what Fran found. I don't cover any of this in the story, but that's probably how they will nail him once they know it's him.

It sounds like Fran was on a mission and she accomplished what she set out to do here without any drama when breaking into Kevin's home. I hope he didn't have security camera's installed inside his apartment! Ha ha ha, another fine chapter Jim, love Dolly x x x

Thanks, Dolly. Yes, let's hope he didn't have a security camera, but chances are he didn't if he uses a password scheme like the one described, showing he's not very careful. (It's the same scheme I use, by the way!)
Comment from Wendy G
If she has gained the evidence illegally it won't be able to be presented in a court of law, and she would still lose her job, wouldn't she? That's how it is over here, at least. Nevertheless, I enjoyed the chapter. However I know it will become more complicated - because nothing is ever achieved in such a straightforward way, especially in novels. Lol. Great chapter! I like that you make me think and get me totally engrossed in the outcomes.

Yes, that's true, but Lou will find another way to nail Kevin now that he knows it's him. For example, they will discover his offshore account where he got a large influx of cash, or they will get Brittany to rat on him to save herself. Then they will get a warrant to enter his apartment and "discover" the data on his computer. Just speculating here, as I won't be going into any of that. This is a relatively minor part of the larger story.
I'll be concentrating on the larger issue of what do we do now to stop the spread? On the other major plot line, we'll be dealing with Big Pharma's response to Glyptophan that threatens their bottom line.
So glad you found this engaging, Wendy. I wasn't sure about this chapter. I'm not so much into writing spy thrillers with a lot of this kind of stuff. I like delving into characters more, but a certain amount of this was necessary. There won't be much more of it.

I am just amazed at all the detail you offer. I don't write like you, and I admire those who are different in their approach to things. The storm wasn't bad at all. Have a good week. Karen

Thanks very much, Karen, for your kind words and 6 stars. I kind of enjoy doing the research for my novels, especially since I discovered and subscribed to Poe.com, the AI site that gives me access to a number of bots. I can quickly find out the answers to things without Googling websites and poring through articles for the answer.
Here is a typical question I might ask: What brand of violin is popular among solo violinists who do touring with major orchestras?
Here is another: Are there any rare plants used in medicines that come from only one place?
Poe gives you the answers to these very specific question in a matter of seconds. Research is so much easier now.

You already turned me on to Poe. It is very helpful. Karen
