Those with a disability have the right to achieve greatness as does anyone else! I'm a huge baseball fan. There was a pitcher by the name of Jim Abbott. Jim had one hand. Yet he made it to the major leagues, pitched well to be in a teams starting rotation and by the way.... pitched a no hitter. Not many pitchers can say that.
There are so many examples to name. But like anything else, you need the will and desire.
Anyone, anyone can achieve!
Harry, thanks for this great post.

I retired from the Department of Veterans Affairs where all types of disabilities were displayed among the employees, including employees with seeing-eye dogs, wheel chairs, crutches, and artificial limbs. Some were veterans, and some were civilians.
Your poem serves as encouragement and inspiration for the disabled, and is sensitizing to the non-disabled person. Thank you for focusing on disabilities.

Your poem rings so much of the truth. Disabled people did not choose to be disabled. They are as much human beings as we are.
"It's alright to let out a sigh."

You are so right Shanbreen. As a disabled Veteran I did not choose this life, but I make the best of it. Thank you so much for your review. I really appreciate it!

This is a very good narrative about the world of handicapped people. "It's alright to finish third " is a GREAT line. Paul tells us we don't have to win the race, we just need to finish.
Very good poem in style and content.

Harry, what a wonderful statement that had to be told. I have a physical disability (I walk with a walker) and I suffer bouts of depression.
Yet my dreams and goals are just as high as anyone's, and can be realized thanks to people who think like you.
A good friend of mine with MD, he passed around age 26 and who attended Penn State like me) told me I shouldnt say "I'm mentally ill,"but "I have a mental illness")
Like you say in your poem, there is a difference.
A person should not be defined by their disability, but rather,
their abilities.
Great poem, Harry.
I'm sorry I don't have six stars to give you, you are really deserving of them.
Best wishes!
Cindy

You are so right Cindy. Disabilities do not define your wants, needs, and hopes. Keep your head held high!

A great shout out for disabled people, Harry. The poem reads really well. Your rhymes flow naturally and the sentiment is real without being 'gushy'. Well done.

This is a great poem of encouragement for those people dealing with "different abilities" (as I've heard someone describe disabilities). All you need to do is watch the Paralympics to see that they can accomplish so much, sometimes even more than a fully-abled person can. Very nicely done!

I needed to read this. This is an excellent piece of work. I agree wholeheartedly that disability is not a dirty word. I won't go into that here; beyond it is what I believe we make it. We all have demons in our lives, and this work hit me deeply. Thank you again; I hope, like me, another reads this work and it connects with them too.
That all aside, the flow of the piece is great, it reads smoothly, and there are no unnecessary words. The only thing I'd suggest, if possible, to include is a break in the work through the language to help the reader reflect more before going on to the next chunk of the work. I'm sorry I don't know what change that would be, but I believe you could do it with this or another work. I gave it a 6-star for a reason. :) Have a great day.

Disabled people are just as special, probably more so, as the rest of us. When I was teaching, I always got the special students put in my class. My paraprofessional wasn't happy about it and complained to me about the extra work. I told her I didn't mind. I'd rather have those students in my class than have them with a teacher who didn't want them. The other grade level teachers didn't want them and said it loudly and proudly. My opinion, they should have found another occupation. Teaching wasn't for them. Thank you for sharing.
