Old men are the worst, I'm guessing they think they have nothing to lose by being inappropriate, sounds traumatic to have had your Uncle do that, yet this chapter could have been 2 chapters, one about maturity the other about art.

Thank you, Joann. I have a friend who worked in a nursing home and she told so wild tales of how those old men act around women. I guess the can claim senility if someone challenges actions. I guess the change of subject is a little abrupt but I'm trying to keep what happens within the same time period together.

Hope you had a wonderful day, Beth!
I know I read this yesterday, but for some reason, my review didn't post. Maybe I was interrupted or something. I wonder how many of us young girls experienced those ugly moments of being touched by an uncle, a neighbor, or someone we knew and failed to tell because we thought we wouldn't be believed. This is another good chapter in your life, though probably not as happy as some.

Thank you, Carol. It happens to me after I read a post and get a phone call before I post the review. Sometimes, I never remember.
I imagine more young girls back then got touched inappropriately.
We were too naive to know how to handle it and like you say, it wasn't always believed.

I remember BC powders, I never took one, but my parents did. I think I took Midol, which was probably aspirin. I think BC was also aspirin, just got into the bloodstream quicker because it was a powder.

Men have always believed they have "the right to take what they want" just because they're men.

I'm confused about the art course you signed up for; because Grandma made the monthly payments, I assume there was a course you were able to take part in?

I imagine Southern politics are pretty much the same now as they were when you were a teenager. Nothing changes in politics. Sadly.

Thanks for the nostalgic return to the past.

Thank you, Pam. BC are twice as strong as 650 vs325 or 81 for chewable Aspirin. Midol has 500m and may have worked of me. i did the Art Instruction course which was advertising art and later worked as a commercial artist. The course didn't cover oil painting. The Southern governors in Louisiana and Mississippi were something to behold. I don't think even Trump could match them for crazy. They were Democrats but policies then were more like Republican policies today. They were extremely racially prejudiced. The South wouldn't elect anyone but a Democrat and now most Southern states go in the opposite direction.

I'm glad that your parents supported the development of your artistic talent. How fun that you and Evan both have that artistic talent!
I'm so sorry that you suffered the sexual assaults from relatives. It's awful but I think that is how men behaved back then - without any respect for young girls, and unable to control themselves in seeing the development.
You told us another time of how a man tried to give you a gift at your aunt and uncle's cafe. I guess it's those hidden motives that your aunt was trying to protect you from when she made you return the gift.

I haven't seen that movie so thank you for telling me about it.

Thank you, Helen. My husband's type of art was crisper and more controlled. Mine was looser and more creative. Our personalities were like that as well. Evan first worked on architectural plan but with Chevron he worked on map and did a lot lettering. I'm glad you remember about the man who gave me the gift. That happened around the same time as what I wrote about in this chapter. I was so naive.

I'm sorry I'm a day late but I hope you celebrate all month like I do!

Thank you. I will celebrater several more times. Yesterday I celebrated with Carol. I got many calls and birthday cards. Those Birthdays seem to come to frequently.

Those older men were guilty of child molesting, but in those days they had a certain sense of entitlement.Interesting to hear about the development of your artistic talents. A most interesting read. Well done, and thanj you for sharing.

Thank you, Wendy. I can't imagine why they thought they could get away with things like that with no one saying anything. Not that it did any good.

Another excellent story that completely entertains. Although, as usual, there was a section that had me gripping my computer mouse much too tightly in anger. It's just maddening some of things we had to put up with as young girls back then. Your stories are always rich in details and descriptions and such a pleasure to read.

I could relate to your years except mine were 1945 - 50. Oh, to go back to those great years when life was simple, we didn't have much but we were happy and not fighting like today. Bread and butter with jam would be our lunch. Today, children don't ask, they demand! Thanks for sharing your memories, Beth. K XX

This is a really interesting chapter that helps bring the past alive again. I liked hearing how you made do with just the very basics of paint colors to start to develop your art talent. Paint tubes are still so expensive that I changed over to colored pencils years ago and stuck with them. It shocks me that older male relatives thought they could take advantage of you as you were related to them.
Little fixes:

I was taking an oil painting course in college before I learned it was a standard color artist use.
I would just change artist to artists.
So, if I appear to be a little coo-coo you my have reason to understand why.
I would change 'coo-coo' to 'cuckoo' and 'my' to 'may' in that sentence. I think I would move the comma after 'So' to after cuckoo. That is because you have a subordinate clause before the main one. What you actually have is an 'if-then' sentence without the word 'then' needed here.

It was a good way to get myself out of a hot sweaty task.
I would put a comma after hot.

Thank you for the review and interesting comment as well as the editing help. It seems several writer are also writers. I think older men assumed they could get away with more back then. Now women are quick to call them out when they try some inappropriate.

I truly enjoyed this. My upbringing was a bit different from yours. As I went through puberty, girls mainly stayed away from me. One slight hiccup:
a word, he reached out a grabbed" (and grabbed?) I remember when we first voted a friend of mine said he was putting in a write-in vote for Harry Trumsn so he could say he voted for Trumsn when he was alive.

Thank you, Jim. I'm pleased you enjoyed my story. I'm having computer problems, and my Google Chrome has a virus. I'm having to use a different browser. I having to learn how to deal with Google. I didn't know how much I depended on it.

Another interesting chapter in your childhood which I enjoyed reading. It really chills me what men thought they could get away with at that time (and still do sadly). But it was as if there was a special dispensation for the elderly to which even parents adhered. Thank you for sharing, Beth. Debbie

Thank you, Debbie. You know I really appreciate you taking the time to help with the editing. I can't seem to find them all. Yes, men back then seem to feel they could get away with more. As you say they still do but not women seem better able to defend themselves.
