Well and interestingly written.
I fear foul play as well as terrible sexual discrimination. Socio-economics probably also factored in, the wealthy stifling investigations.
Best wishes.

I am amazed by your story here. So many unanswered questions. I wonder too why your great grandmother's death was not investigated. So strange. This is a fascinating look at your family history. I plan to research mine as well at some point.

I think there was a demeaning attitude towards women - they weren't worth an investigation. Or perhaps foul play by someone who had the financial wherewithall to cover his crime. Thank you so much for reviewing. I appreciate it.

This is an interesting approach. "Nevertheless, there was an inquest, and the results came back that there was no foul play; his death was an accident. The details were reported at length in the local newspaper." you got the reader leaning forward to find the answer:"Why was she on his property?" this is a good topic. Why was there no investigation? Was it simply that women were not counted as important in those days?" a sad summary.

I think that women were not considered important enough, OR there was foul play and perhaps an important person covered it up. Unfortunately, we'll never know, and nothing can be done. Thank you so much for your insightful review. I appreciate it a lot.

What a fascinating post, and so well written Wendy. There's very little information on my past neither, and now that I'm aware there's no one alive to task, and try to sort out the past, both of Elaine's parents are adopted, so there's a dead end there, and my parents were migrants, beautifully written, but at least my grandchildren have had good starts, God knows, well done, blessings Roy

Yes, and that's the main thing. It's interesting to see how they lived and worked, it's like history lessons, delving back into the past and seeing a different society. But here, there will never be any answers.
Thanks so much for reviewing. Appreciated.

This may remain forever a mystery. All of your scenarios are possible and yet most telling was that they did not open an inquest and fully investigate her death. A mother of eight! I have to say women's lives were not as valued then (and often are not even today)--and if there was foul play I can envision some money changing hands to "stop" any chance of an investigation. We did a bit of genealogical research on my dad's side of the family and uncovered altered birth certificates, changed birthdates, even a case of the "parents" not being the true parents. This is much harder to do today with DNA, et al.

YOU remember her...and your questions keep her alive in your heart.

Thank you, Karenina, for this insightful review. You are right. The other thing is that their names were not even consistent. One of my brothers was Percy Edward, but was always called Mick, and others had their first and second names switched. And yes, altered birth dates etc. It's quite fascinating to unearth their various stories, but here, I don't think we'll ever know what happened to her or the other children.

It is sad that so many are lost to what was no records, or lost records, or (in many cases) altered records. When doing some other research I searched madly for my mom's mom... Emma Corrine (and last name)

My daughter found her birth certificate on one of those "sites" and it was Corrine Emma.

    Go figure!

My uncle was ALWAYS known as "Buddy" I had zero knowledge his real birth name was "Francis"--

It's enough to make us scratch our heads!

So sad. Not yo know the lifeline of so many in her case.

It's also unfortunate how meaningless women were treated during those times. They are the backbone of the family and in her case also the breadwinner.

You wrote and presented your story perfectly, though I know it must hurt to do so.

Thank you, Wendy for sharing.

Thanks so much, John, for this insightful review. Yes, women were not esteemed to be anywhere near the worth of men in those times. Women were simply meant to provide children and look after them. Thanks very much too for the six stars. I am very grateful, and very delighted.

Oh that is so tragic! And records were not kept very well back then, either. I know so much was not shared because of protecting reputations. It's completely opposite now with people sharing the minutia of their daily lives on the internet/social media. I'm glad your grandmother survived!!

Thank you very much Helen. Yes, record keeping didn't have the same importance then as now. And you are right - these days nothing is kept private! Insightful review, many thanks.

What a sad story this is, and what a mystery this is to untangle with apparently no clues. I admit, this would be quite a puzzling story this is, with no good way to unravel it.

It seems really strange that there is absolutely no record of those children. They must have grown to be adults and worked somewhere or married. Something had to be known. Thank you for sharing.

Yes, it is very strange that there is absolutely no information at all about any of them. We'll never know. Thanks so much for reviewing.

I think it's very commendable to investigate one's ancestors but so frustrating to get answers like this. Highly likely that, as a woman on her own and out late, suppositions might have been made and she wasn't considered worthy of a full investigation or even an investigation at all. We can't really comprehend this today when so much attention and money is often spent on search and rescue. It's a positive development I'm sure but then we're living in more affluent times in which people have an insatiable appetite via social media for murder and mystery. Personally, I wouldn't start this process because answers will never be clear and you can be led down some very dark areas of the past which can be both haunting and unsettling. But an excellent, thought-provoking piece, Wendy. Take care Debbie

I think you are right. I am not sure if it was late but one does wonder why she was returning home after nightfall. I think women were not considered worthy of the same amount of investigation as men, but she may have been perceived to have questionable character. Who knows? The lack of information about the children is perplexing. But we have discovered some lovely stories as well.
Many thanks for your thoughtful review, very insightful.
