I never really had a relationship with my father until I was old enough to drink but I did with my best friend's dad, we were opening batting partners in cricket, 22 years my senior, he introduced me to Bridge, solo whist, and a little chess, he taught me how to use my grey matter, he had a large family of eight kids, he was a deputy principal at where my future wife would one day teach, he had a lovely, intelligent wife, he taught me how a real family worked. The need of a mentor in life is so important. Beautifully written Jim, blessings.roy

That's some interesting history, Roy. Sounds like your friend's dad filled in some of the gaps you had in your own family.

I think a lot of the problems of youth today, especially inner city youth, are due to the absence of mentors in their lives. All they have are their own peers who are as clueless as they are.

In the US, our own government contributed greatly to this because of the misguided welfare programs of the 60s and beyond which fostered the destruction of the families by making it more profitable not to have a father in the house. Marriage declined, and out-of-wedlock births skyrocketed. In the absence of a father in the house and a stable family structure, the decline became inevitable.

Sounds like Julia and Brian found what a healthy family is like through this kind professor. Great party atmosphere.
My only question would be that since both Daniel and Kimiko come from abroad, it seems pretty radical for their parents to allow coed living. But maybe the other countries have become more lax over the decades I've been in college.

Or perhaps they didn't tell their parents the sex of their roommates.

When I went to college, a friend of mine had a serious girlfriend the way Elise was my serious girlfriend, and the guys signed up as roommates and the girls did too in the same coed dorm. As soon as we all got there, we switched with each other. My mother-in-law told me years later we didn't fool anyone; they knew what we were doing. Kids!

Lol! Well, we went to pretty liberal colleges but still, foreign students and especially, one that went to Bible study like Daniel would be under expectations to be careful as hormones can take over.

I saw the Charlie Daniel's band in concert a few years back. He put on a very good concert. Thank you for sharing this post with us. I'm glad Brian is doing well, and things are working out for him. I do hope they continue to do so.

I'll bet that was a great concert. Did he do "The Devil Went ... ?" He's probably the one who got me liking country music.

He sure did and it rocked the house.

It's all going so well, Jim! I could be deceived into believing that Brian is on the way up. I like the genetic introduction because this research is obviously going to trigger more self-awareness in Brian. I might have to stop because I can't type fast enough to keep up with the music!! Looking forward to part 2 of this wonderful, informative story. I'm learning a lot. Take care Debbie

Thanks, Debbie. Yes, the genetic introduction was a brief intro to something that will play an important part later in the story. I hope the science will remain informative, understandable, and interesting. Please let me know if it's too much. There will be a lot of drama and comedy mixed in too, so it won't all be science.

"The Devil Went Down..." will recur a couple more times and will take on added significance as the story unfolds in Part 2.

Jim,
Your story gives the reader hope for Brian to start a new life. New starts are always a good thing, as we learn from our past mistakes. (I try new starts every day!)
Great story, Jim.
Best wishes,
Cindy.
I like this story!

Thanks so much, Cindy. Glad you're enjoying it. Things will go well for a while, but you know there will be more trouble before the end. Hopefully, he'll find a permanent solution by the end.

Unsure of where you can go with the next part. It seems all the bases have been touched and the score tallied. I could see the Reickes becoming a central figure, but as for the rest it's in the air.

We'll be getting to the meat of it now with the invention of a new drug to kill pain. We'll be working our way back to the events in the Prologue and then what happens after that. Lots of ground still to cover, and it will move faster than Part 1.

Reading your first paragraph, I had to say to myself, "Isn't science - and our understanding of it and ability to use it to our advantage - a wonderful thing?

Ah, yes, I had forgotten how miserable Jules' family life was; thanks for the reminder here.

So, 72% complete ... that sounds like all that is left is sewing in the ends (knitting talk). Can't wait to get into the last bit of it.

Take care,
xo

28% to go, but the pace gets pretty relentless. Lots of ups and downs and emotions involved. Some science thrown in too as we get into the invention of the drug. Hope you won't mind that. Let me know if it gets too technical.

a super post, and Dr Rieke is a good and wise man, and a wonderful father figure, exactly what Daniel needs. All of them, for that matter. I am looking forward to the rest of your book. I enjoyed the videos as well - i am glad you included them.
