Wow, that's impressive! I can't imagine trying to run a five-minute mile after four other grueling events, sounds very difficult. But you did it! And the only one who stayed your perfect 1% body fat weight during the whole boot camp.
I'm glad you got to go to the front of the line at meals. They don't give you much time to eat!
For this kind of chronicling of a biographical nature, I think your sentence structure is fine. For when you do more creative writing, you might want to vary your sentence structure instead of always Subject-verb clauses. Also, a direct dialogue with your bus riding partner would make it more interesting so that the reader can experience the guy bragging firsthand.

This is well-written and entertaining. It is also about a time when you could be the best that you could be without being shipped off to Viet Nam.
Congratulations and thank you for serving your country for so many years. You also write very well.

Hi Harry,
I love the story of your first hours and experiences as you started your journey in the army. I'm proud of you for your achievement in the physical fitness test and your blue badge.
On another note, I graduated in 1978 from Perry Meridian High School in Indiana. Where did you graduate from?
Take care,
Rhonda

LOL! Where is Perry Meridian High School? I graduated in 1978 from Washington High School, Washington, Indiana.

I was in Indianapolis. It was a pretty new school, near Southport, which was our chief rivals.
-
Oh, I went to first grade in Indianapolis before moving South.

I had never heard of it either. My second husband was in the army, my third was in the navy, And my oldest son was in the air force . Your story was entertaining and nostalgic. Two of my favorites. Good job. Karen

I've never heard of it before, so thanks for the information.
Had to laugh at this:
I hated losing my beautiful hair.
That is when it got 'real' for everybody. Scary moment.

I'm sure your Blue Super Jock Badge is an award that motivated you to push yourself even harder over your years of service. And, I bet your old butt was puckered from what you had to do to get your badge. LOL.
Thanks for sharing.

What a fantastic glimpse into your early military days! The details really pulled me into your story. Your ability to weave humor into moments of challenge, like with the duffle bag, was fantastic. The pride you take in earning that Super Jock Badge is great! This was a well written and enjoyable read.

This was an extremely exciting story about your introduction to the army. I guess it just missed how you felt about them cropping your hair (I'm sure they must have done that). Apart from that I enjoyed it very much, kay
five uncles that fought > five uncles who fought

First of all, thank you for your service, and congratulations on achieving all of your military honors, including your first Super Jock award. Ik enjoyed your detailed description of boot camp. It reminded me of the stories my husband told after his discharge from the Army. He went into bootcamp at six feet tall, weighing 140 pounds. By the end of basic training, he weighed 148 pounds.
I enjoyed reading your experiences and thank you again.

Congratulations. Your Army career was a polar opposite of my Air Force Career. I could not even pass my initial physical, I was four pounds underweight and after being given a month to gain the four pounds, I barely made it. Given this, believe it or not I was made an Air Policeman. I only did law enforcement for about six months, the rest of my time was spent as a glorified security guard. That was cool, I liked spending time alone with my thoughts as I gathered material for my second career as a writer.
