That is so sad, Nomi, smoking can destroy so much. I was a heavy smoker many years ago, I gave up after my late husband died at the age of 46. He missed his children growing up, and all the nice things they gave me. Grandchildren. If only everyone would stop. And yes, those memories do haunt you, and they will always.
A tragic poem, my friend. Love and hugs Sandra xx

Well done. Most interesting photo to compliment your story/poem. My partner was a heavy smoker and I watched her slip away. Memories drift to and fro like seaweed in the tide. We can't bring them back, but we know we will see them again because they are standing by our side on the other side. K xx

A four pack a day man, cigarettes killed my father. And like him, I smoked as much for 30 plus years. No one told us it killed you, and when we started there wasn't a surgeon general warning. I'm so sorry about your friend, and all the other people who have died so senselessly.
Thanks for sharing.

I was very fortunate that the pain I suffered one time was enough of a wake up call to get me off smoking permanently. Unfortunately my wife's dad did not quit in time, though he tried. Thank you for your comments.

This poem is quite long and says the same thing in different ways each time ending with the same refrain haunted by a memory. I feel for you for I lost a loved one to drugs and smoking meth as well as drinking alcohol so I know how you think. If there is someone close to you who smokes you beg them to quit smoking and that is a noble gesture to be sure but smoking goes deeper than one addiction there are usually two or three coexisting addictions that rule a person's life.
Keep writing about things that mean something to you and you can't go wrong.

Thank you Jesse. I am not a crusader really, but I have lost people to the harm of addictive behavior, smoking, drugs, and alcohol abuse. I once did them all but luckily I was able to stop all addictive actions over time and thereby add some years to my life.

Me too. I was able to stop smoking but I understand how difficult it was to stop. So I understand their plight as addicts. It was the hardest thing to quit I ever did.
Keep writing about things that matter. It helps us ponder how we are in life.
Your friend, Jesse

A very well done poem with a powerful message. We had a friend when my children were young who was a heavy smoker and it was a sad day when he became only a memory. So glad you were able to quit.
Well done
Blessings
Janet.

Thank you Janet. I did not realize how captive I was to that habit until was able to put a big enough distance from it to understand.

This is a lovely, poignant poem nomi about these friends, one of which is haunted by memories. I can relate to your author notes, too as my sister has been a heavy smoker for 60 + years and is suffering badly because of it.
Beautifully written,

Thank you so much. My father in-law suffered before his death because he could not shake his addiction to smoking.

This worked for me. Your meter isn't measured, (and I'm not sure that they need to), but your rhymes hit home well, and it's the message that matters anyway. I smoked for decades and finally quit back in 2009, but I do know people who have gotten lung cancer and it's awkward, because everyone in the room knows where it comes from. So good for you for putting out those author notes about quitting. Thanks for posting.

As I am getting older, I have friends who have passed on and it is difficult to lose them. Your words capture the sad feelings and loss one feels when losing a cherished friend. Your words are so true, we can no longer call them. Excellent point about smoking, it does shorten human life span.

Damn those early American settlers who commercialized smoking and sold it to millions worldwide.

This is so sad, especially since you know the person who lost their friend, and was your friend too. Strong emotions throughout.
Each line holds strong emotions.
I'm sorry for your loss.

Thank you so much. Your reading the author notes gave you a more accurate view of the poem's message than some reviewers got.
Comment from Pam (respa)
-Very nice artwork and presentation, nomi.
-Your notes are appreciated and I am
glad you were able to quite smoking.
-A well written poem with effective imagery and rhyme.
-A very good opening verse introducing your friend.
-It is a shame this woman couldn't quite even though she had tried.
-You also do a very good job showing how
the loss of your friend affected you.
-A very good image "Of the friend who is now lost to time."
-The repetition of "the haunted memory" and your
heart being "an icy crust" also emphasize your feelings and loss
of a very good friend.
-Thanks for sharing it, and I hope it has helped you
deal with this untimely and unfortunate loss.
-Take care and be well.
