How did we ever make it through childhood alive? LOL The snake would have done me in completely. I would have never recovered. The cut on the foot would have had me passed on on the lawn until someone came and handled my fainting spells and don't get me started on the Danger of the steam spout! I think the only think that you didn't mention was the wringer on the old washing machine. There were stories of people getting fingers and hands crushed in those things and I refused to use it. Interesting as always. Thanks for sharing.

Thank you Marilyn. I wonder now as well how we manage to survive. As to the old washing machine, I was in my early teens before we had one and then I was forever getting my hand cause in the wringer.

Well I was literally squirming at the thought of that glass going into your foot and cutting a tendon. And my immediate thought was that your foot was bound to get infected in the pond. My goodness, Beth, you were a headstrong young lass! I'm feeling quite sorry for your mother:)) All vividly told and, as ever, a pleasure to read. Thanks for sharing. Debbie. Small edit below:

Thank you Debbie. I dealt with quite a few infections but I guess I had a pretty good immune system because they never got so bad that didn't heal with time. There was penicillin salve Dad used to use to heal me up.

You covered a lot in this episode. Touching a snake sounds terrifying, and the cut on your foot was dangerous.

My mother cooked everything in pressure cookers. She had several in different sizes. When I got married, I had regular cookware and was shocked at how long it took to cook stuff.

I have to go back to look for the story about the circus. I know it's interesting.

Thank you for the review. Pressure cookers are much faster but some of the earlier ones seemed dangerous. Mom had a pressure cannier that held many jars or cans and that is the one that really scared me because when it overheated an let off steam, it almost sound like an explosion.

Very nicely written.
You covered a lot of ground in this chapter.
Pretty tough girl considering how bad your foot was cut.
I don't imagine Mrs. Hardy was very happy about you going to the circus.
Best wishes.

Thank you Wayne. I might have a tough little girl but I was a rather foolish one for not admitting I was hurt.

This chapter is a fun example of the long hot summers of the South and some of the fun things that could be done in school. The circus had to be the very best.

Thank you BIll. The Circus was fun but I might have enjoyed it more if I hadn't be so high on the bleachers.

This was excellent, as are all your chapters. Having almost had my foot amputated and battling infections, I cringed and yelled audibly when I read of your injured foot. Also, coincidentally, I had an eighth grade teacher, Mrs. Hardy, who directed plays and monologues.

Thank you Jim, That is interesting that you almost lost a foot from an injury. I cringe too, over my on injury now. I could have gotten injuried by broken glass this morning. My cat roamed the house in the dark last night the this morning there was a broken cup and a broken bowl on the ceramic kitchen floor when I walked in barefoot. Luckily I saw all the broken glass in time.

Thank God! You could have seriously been injured. If anything , God forbid, happens, please take immediate care. I wasted my time and a severe infection developed. I should have tended to it earlier. I kept avoiding it because I hate the hospital, but I should have known better.

It's a wonder you ever covered with a cut tendon, I remember the first thing the did was give one a tetanus shot. There were a lot of broken bones when I was young, the playgrounds weren't that safe with bitumen floors, I love this, grazed knees were the thing, they tend to make kids play areas ultra safe these days, I think ours taught us life skills, those of us that survived, well done Beth, great post, blessings Roy,

Thank you Roy. It took several years before I didn't feel a slight pain in that foot when I walked. Even now I can feel a tiny lump where the cut was. Kids do stupid things. Thank you for the six stars.

One of my daughters-in-law, Chrystal, had never been anywhere except the small town she lived in. We took her and our son to a St. Louis Cardinal baseball game. As we walked up the bleachers, she was afraid the stadium would fall. She'd never been so high before. Thank you for sharing this story. I love reading these memoirs.

It took weeks for the cut to heel. (heal)

I think I was born with a fear of heights and I hate bleachers. I can understand your granddaughters concern but I sure she was thrilled to get to go to big city iwth her grandparents.

Darn. I missed so many chapters. This makes me mad because I enjoy your writing style... it's calm, soft, easy to read and with just enough detail to enjoy (at least for me).

I'll have to be more diligent.

Thank you John, The chapter before this one is still active and I sure could use one more review to get to 15. I'm glad you like them.

Sometimes I think we came out of the same mold, Beth. I, too, stepped into the river to give my dad his radio (he was in his boat) and stepped on a broken mayo jar. Slit my foot open and I passed my mother and grandmother leaving a bloody trail all the way into the kitchen sink. It took all summer to heal. Great stories as usual!

That is a coincidence that you and I both badly injured our foot on glass. It almost happened to me again yesterday. My cat had knock a cup and bowl on my cermic kitchen tile floor during the night. There was glass shards all over the floor when I walked in barefooted. I did cut my finger picking it up. I felt like killing a cat.

Oh Heavens, Beth! I'm glad you didn't get hurt again. I still remember how awful it was not to be able to walk right and wearing those stupid shoes. Be careful!
