We still have a set of encyclopedias in our living room. Haven't been touched in years. LOl Thank you for sharing this memoir with us.
It seems to me that was the year we did a lot of diagraming sentences. Is that still taught? (Yes and no, it is taught but in a different format.)

Thank you Barbara. I still have a more recent set in my bookcase. I get my information on the computer now but I needed them back then.

So many memories you bring back. I believe my parents bought the same set of Encyclopedias for myself and my siblings. We just got rid of them when my mom passed a year ago. They hung around all those years and were still used for reading lessons by the grandkids as they showed up. My one question is:

Did your teacher seriously say that to you? I mean, wow! That wouldn't fly today, would it? lol

Thank you Marilyn. Yes my teacher used those words many times when she angry. I would have thought she have been called out for saying that. She much have thought it would scare up. I never that expression from anyone else.

In looking back, I sometimes wonder if anything that has to do with history gets shared correctly. I mean, not that it truly matters what year or time it was as much as what happened. LOL. Thanks for sharing.

Thank you Carol. Yes my grandmother wanted everyone to get an education. It was the thing she felt she missed out on but it her day most schools only encouraged girls to stay in school until the fifth grade. Grandma was self educated because she read and kept a dictionary handy.

My father didn't believe in education or books because he didn't get to have a choice. He made a lot of money with his brains and hands and he figured everyone else could do the same. I'm glad my mother was just the opposite.

I really enjoyed this chapter - a lot of touchstones.
I think it was fifth grade when we diagrammed sentences. Split modifiers were problematic.
I remember Truman was re-elected, but paid little attention. Communism was the worst threat and most slanderous thing to call someone (that wasn't dirty).
World Book encyclopedias were the home's treasure! As you say, they earned their keep with homework assignments. But I usually defaulted to the Encyclopedia Britannica at school, that and the Collier's set.
I seem to remember that farmers did not qualify for Soc Sec.
