If this is all non-fiction, I'm sorry you grew up with a mother that would do things like beat her son up with a cord and try to destoy his dreams. Also you must have been in embarrased at the actions with a man you'd not met before. I'm wondering if you ever had a good relationship with her. It seems to me your turned out just fine in sprite of you upbringing. Good writing. I'm glad she wasn't able to stiffle your dreams.
