What an incredibly sad story. I can read horror stories with pretend monsters all day and watch the scariest of movies but anything about war is off limits to me. I can't handle the truth of it and the depth of despair that mankind brings upon itself. But i thank you for sharing your writing. Nicely done.

I do not relish writing anything with a war background, but sometimes, for the subject matter, it seems to be the best setting. I never try to glorify war, although I did win an award for my Audie Murphy tale deep in my portfolio.

Your Story was very good. I wasn't commenting on that. I just have trouble emotionally reading about war.

I understand. I'm just happy you're still talking with me after those terrible puns.

This is and excellent story of war and can happen but the death of soldier who has a family and children means many more people will suffer. War is terrible. I'm glad I didn't meet my husband until he was safely back home.

I am glad also. Not only were you blessed, but your tales have been a blessing to me and the others at FS!

Ouch! This brought a tear to my eye, for both the situation you described, and because it made me miss my own daddy that much more.
You have such a beautiful way of creating real people with genuine emotions, and putting the reader exactly where they are, both physically and emotionally. Even Sarge, who we never truly meet except through the eyes of your narrator, is truly, fully developed. You didn't create characters as much as real people with whom the reader can identify, and that is a true credit to your writing skill.

Great story of admiration and self reflection, the complex relationships between parents and children are often common, private and sometimes tragic. two people make a relationship of any kind, and both parties have to be accountable for their situation, wether good or bad.

You are right and I appreciate your comments.

Very well written story, with important themes of relationships: mateship, fatherhood and the role of fathers, the essential value of a life, and sacrifice. Powerful.

Often, I chose paths that were not sanctioned by my father. But I am thankful I was able to change my life.
Comment from Carol Hillebrenner
This is a good story set in a war that allows the good guys to be losers. Only one survived, one who will miss his fatherly Sarge and not forget what he did to his own father.

Thank you! Unfortunately, Life doesn't always allow us neat, wrapped packages to resolve our ordeals.

That is so true about life.

This was a tragic story and you chose to share it straight on father's day.... the hero who's left behind.Thank you for sharing and good luck with your writings.

This story conveys emotion well. The scene is well described, and the mateship between Sarge and the writer (supposedly,) is strong. The mateship of the other comrades adds a little humour. You balance reality with emotion well. Who does not want Daddy? Most of us have said or done the wrong thing ay some stage. What I like most is that the emotion is conveyed without touching the reader's own emotions. Looking forwad to reading more.

If I could bring my dad back, there is nothing of mine I wouldn't gladly sacrifice.

Same here, Jim. I miss Dad every day despite a good marriage. Blessings to you

Have a very blessed weekend!

Thanks for a father story for this upcoming Father's Day weekend! Your narrator gives us a sense of how hard it is for those with difficult relationships with their fathers and how it helps to have a father figure we respect in life like Sarge.
