A haunting story of a man who survives a battle to end all battles, only to return home to a woman who never even realizes that he loves her. The fact is, he had been afraid to approach her before, and now, with the loss of his legs, he feels he never will have a chance.

Great story,
Rhonda

Excellent! An unexpected and very moving twist at the end. Your story is well written and a great response to the prompt. Best wishes for the contest.

Very nicely written.
Here's a tiny little glitch - "I have her routine done pat. 5:30,"... - (down?)
Great surprise ending.
Good luck in the contest.

Thank you. I fixed that glitch. I'm a terrible editor.

An excellent entry for the Song Stories contest. Interesting and creative story to go with Dean Martin's song. I'm sure old Deano would have been impressed. Nice name for Gunners girl. Good luck in the contest.

Your little post here hits hard with the reality of the lifetime scars that soldiers bear in the service of their country, often life changing things like PSTD and amputations that color society's view of people. The difference between the life we wanted to live, the hopes and dreams we had, and the caging reality we find ourselves in can't be more stark than the image of the soldier with no legs, watching the girl he loves going off with someone else. estory

Thank you very much for writing this. As a 20+ year Army man and having served as much time away from family as I did with them I can truly relate. I of course could never imagine having gone through it without the use of internet or phones, I think the fear of the unknowing and not being able to contact made the men of those days stronger than any military man now.

Wow, I have to admit I didn't see that coming, which isn't usually the case with most stories. Your story is one that will hit home with many, as most of us have had a crush we were never able to act upon. I'm usually out of sixes by Monday or Tuesday, but this week I wanted to keep one for something special. I'm glad I did. Thanks for sharing.

Wow! Wow! Wow!

What an incredible story and entry into the contest. I may as well hold off taking the last reserved spot. My thoughts can't compare or compete with this one.

From the war in Anzio, to no soldiers bragging of there girls back home, to the fibb 'n al soldiers realization of his unfortunate situation, this is perfectly written.

I thoroughly enjoyed this in the manner told. Best of luck in the contest.

John

I like your story but there is nothing in the song about a war. I believe you were told to write a story about the song. The only part of your story that agrees with that is the street where she lives.

But, it's up to you what you write. Like I said I like the story, itself. But, I can't give it high ratings because of that.

This rating does not count towards story rating or author rank.
The highest and the lowest rating are not included in calculations.

I used the song to stress the inner feelings of the vet as he "rolled" down her street.

This is a lovely story and very emotion packed. The reader knows he was too shy to make an impression on Cindi before the war. When he comes back the reader is rooting for him to approach her. Then we learn part of him stayed behind at Anzio, a part that made her caring for him unlikely.
