Interesting, unique rhythm to this, and I found the journey of the struggling tree quite moving. There is a struggle here from darkness to light, from broken branches to new leaves, from fallen apples to new blossoms. The imagery was really well done. estory

Your heartfelt emotion can be felt in your creative analogy of a tree, fallen apple and roots. This is a thought provoking evaluation of your developing relationship with your mother from childhood to the present. I'm glad that the burden of your past has been cast aside. Best wishes in the contest.

This poem, Apple Tree, presented with eight ABCBDBEB-rhymed octaves, serves as the metaphor for the relationship between the mom and child after the birth. Postpartum depression could lead to very negative and dangerous situations.

Thank you for sharing this, your Mama's true story in The Apple Tree. I suffered with this a little bit with each birth but it seemed to lift after a few weeks. I was living in the north at the time, in Upstate New York, and getting out for walks and such and absorbing sunshine was critical. I found it to be the best mood lifter. Those pregnancy hormones are strong though and they have a hard time packing up and going away afterwards. Sometimes we need to shoo them out. I'm thrilled to see there's a national maternity hotline. Thank you for sharing, my friend, and all my best in the contest.

This is beautiful, Jess. Your writing is so metaphorically in tune with what you're writing.
I can't say enough about how your message and metaphors intertwine gracefully.
Very well done! Best, JohnC

I can only imagine how overwhelming it must have been for your mum... having a baby is a whirlwind of emotions in itself without a postpartum diagnosis. Your poem is so moving and beautifully written.... I'm happy for you that you connected with your mum towards the end.
All the best!

An outstanding poem. You have explored the complexities and far-reaching effects of PPD with extraordinary detail and insight and the original idea of using the saying about the apple falling near or not far from the tree. I am glad you were able to reconcile and connect before her death. Well written.

I'm so glad that you were able to understand your mom and that she could break out of her depression and reach out to you and establish the connection you both needed. You're right that postpartum depression is very hard to understand especially from the child's perspective of feeling abandoned. Beautifully told in your poem!
Best wishes in the contest!
