I'm just curious - Did the Germans call WWI 'The Great War'?
Trouble indeed. I thought about Momma and Heddy having to lie as soon as Artie gave it to her. Could be a problem.

    Artie has been stateside for a number of years. He's picked up a lot of American sayings. Not sure if all Gerrmans said it. Thank you for this. Gretchen

Your Heddy is wonderful, Gretchen! Such a delight. This never gets overly sentimental which is what helps the reader bond so well to her. And the dialogue is, of course, very credible. Every time I read about Artie, I think of the old man in Home Alone. Although, possibly Artie isn't that old.

My father was (in) the Great War.

    Thank you, Debbie. I'm so glad you are staying with this story. I think this is one of my very favorites. I like all the characters except Mrs. Collette and she serves her purpose. Thank you so much for this incredibly nice review. Gretchen
