This is fascinating because I've always loved the look of people who are left-handed. It's just an idiosyncrasy of mine. And they always seem to be more arty and academic. My daughter is left-handed and now I can call her a Mollydooker (which I've never heard before). As ever, Wendy, you've put time and research into this post, making it a very informative and enjoyable read. Thank you for sharing. Debbie

I love your descriptions of your left-handed granddaughter. She is a cutie, and she's going to be a special kind of joy. My smartest grandchild (Don't tell the others I said so) is a captain in the Air Force. He excelled at anything he set his hand to. His creativity shows up most in music- guitar and any related instruments. When he was just a wee child, sitting at our kitchen table to color, my daughter said, "We're trying to decide if Nolan is left-handed." I told her, "You might check the crayon behind his left ear."

Miss Six sounds very gifted and will accomplish everything with great success with her "southpaw". I bet she may become a mathematician as well as a musician and artist. That's so cool that she could draw upside down and write backwards so easily!

Thank you Helen for this lovely review. So long as she uses whatever skills and gifts she has, to the best of her ability .... I have to say that I was amazed by that drawing upside down and backwards writing.

What a wonderful read, it reminded me of a great Aussie tennis player, Ken Rosewell, I have never looked this up, but I was told (while attending a tennis academy) that he was a mollydooker, unheard off back then (apparently) so he learned and was trained to play right handed, (very well I might say) I have a cousin who is ampedextrious, can write with both hands at the same time, very well written****kahpot

Yes, you are right. Another famous lefty was Rod Laver one of the best of all time having won two grand slams. Thank you so much for reviewing. I do appreciate it always.

Wow. I can't tell you how astounded it was to read your account of how she drew your stick figure "upside down" and added her name writing right to left! I've never seen such a thing! Talk about spatial awareness and the here-to-fore undiscovered "gifts" left-handers may have!

I'm thinking of the Nuns when I was in school. Indeed, anyone trying to use their left hand to draw or write got a sharp "rap" on the knuckles and (on several occasions) had their left hand tied to the side of their desk chair.

How archaic! I read (somewhere) that "sinister" comes from Latin, meaning "on the left" -- which became synonymous with being left-handed.

It's disconcerting that in some cultures, being left-handed still has a negative connotation.

It's about time we put an end to THAT!

Thank you so much, Karenina, for this lovely review. Yes, it is interesting to ponder spatial awareness and what the brain is capable of that we know nothing about as yet. Yes, teachers in the 50s were actually quite cruel sometimes! Glad thata particular teaching style is finished with.

Wendy. I'm astounded with the method she drew the figure for you. I'm trying to envision myself doing that and I'm having difficulties seeing it done. Wow!

Our youngest son writes lefty and basically does everything else righty , except shoveling the food in his mouth.

I enjoyed your post. Very interesting.

Cheers,
John

Lol. Yes, I agree, I couldn't draw or write like that. It's a very interesting thing how the brain works. I wonder if your son adapted to doing other things right-handed because the equipment didn't adapt well to left-handedness. Thank you so much for reviewing. I appreciate it a lot.

When I was in school, teachers would attempt to force left-handed children to use their right hands. Unluckily we know more about it now and that doesn't happen anymore. Thank you for sharing this with us. Once again, it seems tolerance is the key.

They are sometimes better at sport, (sports??)

Hello Wendy. Your granddaughter sounds delightful. Being left-handed is an advantage as far as I am concerned. I am left-handed as well and can attest to the fact that those of us who are left-handed are more creative and clever than those who are simply right-handed.
An excellent piece on the folly of a young girl who is decidedly different from the rest.

It looks like you may have a very special child on your hands, Wendy. Many of your observations were quite interesting. I have always been very good at geometry (my favorite course to reach). I am right-handed. Maybe I should have been a leftie.

Yes, I enjoy geometry too. It's a great branch of Mathematics, both interesting and relevant. Yes,she is a special little girl. I think her mother was pleasd to have another efty in the family. Thanks so much for reviewing.

To find a way of feeling like a lefty simply do whatever it is you are planning to do in front of a mirror.. It's as easy as one - two - three. Another is to mmic how you do right-handed left handed, like shooting a basketball, which I did proficiently. Well done.

I don't really want to feel like a lefty and I can't cook or tie shoelaces with the help of a mirror! Lol. Thanks for reviewing. Appreciated!
