I'm thinking that you had fun racing around in Heddy's brain over what Momma would do if she learned about the kiss. And then you have her rat herself out! Hah! Hilarious.

Heddy's journey through is beautifully shown here. The writing is solid! You capture the complexities of young love and the aftermath of war so well. The scene at the dinner table is so enjoyable. You share the innocence of childhood amidst the backdrop of adult conversations and emotions. Heddy's internal struggle with her feelings for Lester and her fear of the repercussions is so clear. I love her mother's gentle guidance. The final scene at the beach is particularly moving, showing a moment of healing and connection between siblings.

After suffering war we just want normality and to see our family untouched by such terrible tragedies we may have seen and the every day calm and domesticity is comforting. It is funny that Heddy blurts out that line about not kissing Lester, guilt makes us make comments like that.
