It seems like something is stirring in Heddy, that has already had its way with Lester, to hold onto secrets like Artie is hard for youth to hang on to, even when age teaches that discretion is preferable to destroying relationship for something God has buried in the depths of the ocean. Well done, blessings Roy
Typo : Your Aunt is the (w)retched woman...

Thank you, Roy. At least Lester can see Artie as a human and not an enemy. I appreciate the review. Gretchen

I find touching. These children seem so innocent and pure. Lester has a crazy aunt to live with but we all have crazies some where among our relatives. The Island does seem like a magical place. I'm glad Lester met Artie and believes him. I always enjoy your stories.

Having had relatives live through WW2, and heard their stories, I know war is a terrible thing. The cities in England were bombed and although my Grandfathers both survived, one died before I was born and the other one died shortly afterwards. Your story is sensitive and caring and I know that people from Germany were not welcome in England and would not have been welcome in the US during the second world war. Mr Artie is right to be afraid. I am glad that Heddy and Lester did the right thing and gave him his letter and Lester's Aunt is a cruel woman for hiding this letter from him. I am enjoying your story Gretchen, always well written and a pleasure to read, love Dolly x x x

This is a very nice chapter. Well written, too.
I feel better about Lester now. Hopefully he won't rat out Artie.
Heddy might have caught a case of puppy love.
Best wishes.

Just a beautiful chapter, Gretchen!
How I smiled at Artie's characterization of Lester' mother with her dirty hair!
But my favorite two paragraphs are as follows:
For a moment, all we can hear is the crashing of the waves on the shore. No one says anything. Artie stares off into space, his eyes seeing something that neither Lester nor I can see. I'll bet its his mother's face and his brother's. For a short time he is there with them, hugging and being happy. Momma does that sometimes when she talks about Willis. She pretends he's right there.
Artie stands and walks to Lester. "Thank you, Lester, for bringing this letter to me. It took bravery to do that. I know you have your doubts about me, but I am a son and a brother, nothing more. I am no spy."

So beautifully rendered.
Thank you for sharing, Gretchen!

I sure hope Lester keeps Artie a secret. I'm afraid for Artie's safety. You ar doing a great job with this story.
