"I can say with pride that I very much appreciate being an American citizen." Amen, brother--hear, hear!
Put a question mark at the end of your first sentence--after the word 'else'.
I appreciate your thoughytful and balanced view of America's history and deeds here. Some bad--pretty bad--but a lotta very good, as well.
I love you, my brother, as we share a common history and national culture.

I agree with your words. We so much to be thankful for in this country, especially all the freedoms we have. It seems recently there is so much negative press about the state of our country, yet we forget about all the good things you mention. You have written a positive essay that makes the reader think.

What I can't understand and am very worried about, is yes, as a country we've made mistakes, but shouldn't we learn from those mistakes, so we don't make them again? I truly pray we do. Thank you for sharing this very wonderful post with us.

Thank you for your supportive comments and your probing questions regarding what path we as a country must take in order to make needed progress.

Well said, Nomi! I am not an American, I'm British and proud to be so. Both our countries have been responsible for many atrocities, but we have also been responsible for much goodness. We must not forget that. Your list of many famous people, who overcome adversity and became leaders of good, there are many such people, we must always remember that. Well done, my friend, I really enjoyed reading this. Warmest hugs. Sandra xx

Thank you so much for your kind remarks. I think that what is most important is that we are first and foremost, citizens of the world. God blessed the entire world, not just those who speak and understand English. When Jesus walked the Earth none of the English speaking world even existed. Now many English speakers act as though they have exclusive ownership of the Christ.

You are absolutely right, and that is something English speaking countries should remember. xxx

I think our government has treated others badly; as ordinary citizens, we tend to be more understanding and compassionate. I've witnessed real a-holes drop their mean attitudes toward others when others treat them kindly or try to reason with them.
It is up to us to change the things that are wrong with America - we have the power, we only lack the will sometimes. The great African-Americans you named did not lack will.
I'm proud of who we are too - mostly sane, kind, generous individuals.
Enjoyed reading this.

Thank you Pam, and one of the best things about this country is that we can speak openly about its shortcomings and not fear prosecution.

I cannot comment on the sentiments of a Proud American since I have no experience in your country. However, I like your writing style and that you argue both achievements and shortcomings in American history. Nicely written. - Terry

Thank you. Even though you are not a citizen, I am sure you have observed us in action. I thank you very much for your kind comments regarding my writing.

Just like our own families, leave the complaining to us. We know our weaknesses and strengths and can seek to improve and get better. The list of well-known personalities is long, but not as long as the never-heard-of people who build us up and pull us through every day. God Bless America.

Thank you Bill, spoken like a true patriot. No, not a New England Patriot, but a real red blooded American patriot.

Nomi, Bravo. This needed to be said. We are not a perfect Nation, but we have done more good than harm, both at home and abroad. There is no perfect nation, and there is no perfect Man, but what makes us different is that we never stop trying--even if/when it gets ugly.
Of special note:
I very strongly believe that one of America's strongest contributions has been its hands off approach to religion.
(Agree)
Well done; well said. Margaret ~ LateBloomer

Thank you Margaret, you words mean a great deal to me as you are someone I both admire and respect.

Your writing was so on-target that I had to read it to my husband this morning over breakfast. He sends his thumbs up too. Margaret

My gratitude for that solid vote of confidence is as high as it can get. I thank you both so much.

I enjoyed reading your poem. You are so right. I am proud to be an American citizen too. I wouldn't want to grow up in any other country. The poem is written well. I liked the fact that you listen positive and negative things. Great job

This is a wonderful article about the country we share. It has taken a while, but many people of various ethnicities have found success in this country, and their influence continues to spread. Thank you for sharing these hopeful thoughts.

Thank you Carol. Your thoughts and my thoughts are in total agreement. We may have things in this country that are regrettable, but we also have many more things that we should celebrate and applaud.
