Heddy might be heading toward her first kiss. I am worried about Artie. I sure hope Lester doesn't give him away. I believed his story about not wanting to fight for Germany. Thank you for sharing this story with us.

Thank you so much. Gretchen

Good as usual. Do you view this as a young adult story? Childrens story, or just a story? The plot moves along at a good pace. I have enjoyed all of it, I love Heddy. This could turn into a series. "Heddy Holds her horses", Heddy hears something horrid", Heddy and Lester brave a Southwester" I could go on.
Karen :-)

I just write stories. I try not to think about genres when I write. I'm glad you are enjoying this. Gretchen

I do hope you get the next part posted soon, Gretchen!! I want to know what is in that letter. And do Heddy and Lester test out that kiss???? I remember my first one, how embarrassing it was. I puckered up and he said, 'You've never been kissed before, have you?' No, I hadn't, but I had no idea how he knew that!! LOL Another brilliant chapter of everyday life for a normal wartime family. I'm loveing this story. :)) Sandra xx

Thank you, Sandra. Going to post this weekend. I really appreciate your encouraging review. And the extra star. Gretchen

It sounds like Lester and Heddy are becoming closer Gretchen and I enjoyed your descriptions of the different skies painted and the speculation about the German man who probably just wants some peace in life and is uncomfortable at being exposed as a German. War encourages people to hate. Another fine chapter, love Dolly x

This is one of those chapters that takes me back in time and makes my imagination run wild. Yep, and that's all I'm going to say about it. LOL. Thanks for sharing another fine chapter.

N ice movement. Now that Lester is a co-conspirator, maybe he won't rat out Artie.
I hope Lester's shoes and socks won't get washed away or ruined by the tide.
Best wishes.

He left his shoes high up on the beach. They won't get washed away. Lol. Thank you for this nice review. Gretchen

I'm anxious to find out if the man can ease Lester's suspictions about him and if he will be happy to get the letter. I think Heddy really likes Lester and she would angry if he wanted to kiss her, but they are likely better off just being friends.

Thank you, Beth. I think they are a tad young for that first kiss. I appreciate your review. Gretchen
Comment from Debbie D'Arcy
Your skill at writing is sublime, Gretchen! I become instantly immersed into a child's world in which everything seems an object of curiosity and nature is automatically personified as friend or foe. The developing friendship with Lester is also a delight to read. And Nonni, of course, is always looking on in her guardianship role so we feel safe and warm. There is one small edit: hopped (on) a ferry and (ran?) off.
An excellent read, thank you. Debbie

It's southern speak to say run off or hopped a ferry. Extra words just don't make the cut sometimes. I'm glad you are enjoying this story. Gretchen

Aw, Gretchen,
Have you any idea the ease and deliciousness of your writing is on this reader's heart and soul?
From the very first paragraph, you engage the reader with prose that is captivating, and I so enjoy the fact that you are writing in the present tense = the immediacy is palpable.
So very much enjoyed, Gretchen!
All of it = exceptional!
Thank you for sharing!
Fondly,
diane

Thank you, Diane. This review just made my day. I'm glad you are enjoying this story. I think of myself more as a storyteller than a writer. So this review made me very happy. Gretchen
