Parents Beware
American Criminal Law has taken a huge step.29 total reviews

I have learned today of a schoolboy shooting in Finland and I'm appalled. I certainly don't hope we're about to emulate the American gun culture here in Western Europe. That's something that is quite alien to us. This idea that you need to own a gun or an arsenal is ludicrous. Prohibit them all and make it unlawful to own one is the only answer. So far we feel safe to go shopping without being afraid of being mowed down by sme lunatic. Now, I'm half American, but guns are prohibited in my family's home in Mass. My brother and sister- in- law are having none of it.
Unfortunately, the gun lobby in the US has too much power. I wonder what would happen if a senator's son or daughter was mowed down.
I'm glad the parents will end up in jail. Ulla:)))

Thanks for your review. I agree the gun lobby in America has too much power. It will also be interesting to see how the decision in this case will start to influence future prosecutions of parents. Take care and despite everything, have a wonderful day.

Thank you for sharing this well written post with us. As a retired teacher who started teaching in 1976 and left teaching in 2021, I know how the acting has changed over the years and the lack of responsibility parents feel as they parent. I happen to feel this is a good thing. Most parent are aware their child has a problem and have probably been told since the child was in elementary school and have refused to either believe it or do anything about it. I have seen it over and over again.

Babara,
Thanks for your review and comments. Yes, your experience as a teacher would have given you insight into many of the problems facing American society today. This case could well set the foundations of some change in place.
Take care and have a wonderful day.

Yes, I heard about this. If they can prove that their kids were noticeably to mcnuggets shy of a happy meal, and they left guns layong around they should be tried for conspiracy. good writing. Karen

Teri,
Thanks for your review. Say hello to your son for me. Law is an all -consuming profession. He no doubt would have a view on this case.
In any event, please take care and have a wonderful day.

Your story is very powerful. I think in this case the parents should face charges because they were negligent with Ethan. It is such a sad situation because the entire family was affected. This story is well written and I could follow along easily. Great job

Brenda,
Thanks for your review and comments. Yes, I agree that this case presented a totally sad situation. Unfortunately, I fear it is hardly the only case like this one that is out there.
In any event, please take care and have a wonderful day.

Parents beware... and be aware.
Though this case would not have been affected. We need Red Flag laws as well as parental responsibility.
Personally, I was relieved that the court system worked to protect innocent lives. Too late for Ethan's victims, but maybe not for others.

Wayne,
Thanks for the six stars. Much appreciated. Yes, it is too late for Ethan's victims, but perhaps the results of this case will start a debate that is needed. It is obviously a politically sensitive topic.
Take care and have a wonderful day.

Wow this is very important information I don't know if everybody knows this. " Both James and Jennifer attended the meeting and refused to take Ethan home after the meeting. Apparently, James volunteered that they had to work harder. Four hours later the shootings took place." this reminds me of the book the people of the lie by M Scott Peck the parents have no conscience. If you haven't read this book it's on the PDF online andThere's a couple cases in there that really stood out for me If you want to know a summary of the one that I was especially struck by I'll be happy to give it to you later. A good topic to address.

Liz,
Thanks for the review. I will search out the writing you mentioned and get back to you if need further assistance. Yes, this case will spark much debate on the issue of parent responsibility, and how far the law should go in controlling it.
Take care and have a wonderful day.

This scares the hell out of me! Please read the Katherine Messenger story if you haven't. Kitty Messenger and her husband were sent to jail for their son-in-law's crimes. Set in the 1950's, a store owner in a southern town gladly extends credit to George & Kitty Messenger who promise to pay when the crops come in. Unbeknownst to them, their son-in-law raises their bill, substantially, and the store owner expects payment by the end of the week. The sheriff has biases and prejudices against the family and abuses his authority and get the Messengers out of town. He comes up with a bogus charge, and the Messengers lives become a living hell. George and Kitty spend time in jail and some of their children are sent to a foster home. One day while cleaning the jail floor, Kitty drinks poison to try and kill herself.
This is the way it used to be here in the United States, and here we go again?!?
What you just saw with Jennifer Crumbley was a perfect opportunity to set a precedent in every incident where there was a shooting involving either a mentally ill or unhinged person getting hold of a gun or an assault weapon. It sets a precedent of immediate culpability which assumes that the parent is complicit in the crimes. This is ridiculous, and is offensive to our constitutional rights. Although this woman was a terrible parent, the gun control issue will not be solved in this way. On the contrary, it will strip of us our constitutional rights and freedoms because of the ones setting the precedent in these court cases. Adding to it, is the media. They've become the kings and queens of the human suffering and they have made this issue a spectator sport. "Let's get them all behind bars and the relatives. They've all bad, right?"
Point being, once a precedent has been set in court, and parents can be hauled off to jail for their children's crimes, the sky will be the limit. Trust me when I say, it will not end with guns. We'll be living back in another time. Rights are real hard to get back once they are gone. I say toughen the gun laws and do better, more stringent background checks. {{Our constitution is great, and states that everything be done to promote the general welfare...for all.}} We need to get back to that in godspeed.
My view from the here, my friend. I am an American patriot and a Libertarian. Thank you, again.

Sally,
Thanks for your review. Also thanks for your comments attaching to the issue. Yes, the case has raised the issue of the law imposing parental standards that could well see prosecutions increase quite substantially. That is why it must be discussed and handled sensibly by all forms of government. That may be asking too much.
I certainly will be watching how it all progresses.
Take care and have a wonderful day.

Barry

It's a sobering case all right. It also seems somewhat at odds with the current problem that parents have limited ways to deal with troublesome children. Can you imagine the fuss if these parents had taken their child home and locked him in his room until he agreed to see a mental health professional?
These days, I believe parents don't even have the right to know if their children visit a doctor without their knowledge. (Might be wrong about that. My children are adults.)
One thing... matters.? What does it now tell parents about their responsibilities when dealing with their teenage and younger children.?
Get rid of the full stop before these question marks.

Thanks for your review. Yes, it is somewhat at odds wth the current situation but maybe this case will at the very least bring about some real debate as to which way we should go,
Thanks also for your punctuation tip.

Barry, I thank you for you informative post. You are clear with your facts with very little bias. You do say what you think might be the outcome of these trials. It was my first thought when I heard about them that it was setting a dangerous precedence, just someone else to blame in the blame game. However, these parents did blatantly ignore their son's cries for help. Where do you draw the line with responsibility for someone else's behavior? I don't know that answer, either, but change is coming as a result.
Take care,
Rhonda

Rhonda,
Thanks for your review. Yes, the circumstances of this case were such that the prosecutor decided to make the leap and charge the parents. The jury obviously agreed. As you correctly put it" Where do you draw the line?"
Take care and have a wonderful day.

Barry.
