There is an eerie silence in such places, a sense of tragic loss. Hard to define but you have an echo of it in your poem, especially in the lines: The footsteps of ceremonies
And forgotten rituals
. I have seen ruins in Mexico and Guatemala at sunset, which is, for me, the most evocative time. In that regard, your final lines are perfect.

Nice trajectory across the time it brings that longing for a piece of history that is still a mystery. Thank you for sharing and good luck with your writings.

This is very well written, and I enjoyed listening to it. You have asked very serious questions and to those questions I'm not sure that we will ever know the answer. May you have a good day and may you continue to write your lovely work.

Thanks for the excellent review and all these encouraging comments in support of the poem. I like to get people thinking about these issues of death and life and the meaning of life. The ephemeral nature of places like Machu Picchu are perfect symbols of that. estory

It does make you wonder about the transience of our civilisations. One minute successful and robust, the next a ghostly ruin (well, probably not quite that quickly). I enjoyed your lovely verse about Machu Pichu and the questions raised about how this could all happen or who would make it come to pass. In turn, we have to look inward at ourselves, that no permanence is guaranteed here; on the contrary, the history books tell us otherwise. Thanks for sharing your thought-provoking post. Debbie

Ah, this really speaks to me. Long have I wanted to visit Machu Pichu (and so many other ruins besides). I look forward to reading more of these. It's been on the back burner for a while, but I started writing something on the Ishtar Gate. Perhaps it's time to turn back to it?

Thanks for the excellent review and your words of support for my piece. The piece you are working on sounds interesting. I thought Machu Picchu would be the perfect symbol for this theme of the transient nature of life and cultures and asking about the meaning of life in light of this transient experience. There will be more poems about ruins in this collection; The Pyramids, The Coliseum, Stonehenge, L'Anse Aux Meadows. estory

It does cause someone wonder what happened to them. I have often wondered why all civilizations didn't progress at a similar rate. That doesn't make sense to me. Thank you for sharing this with us. I enjoyed reading.

I like your choice of theme and imagery here. I think these ancient ruins are an object lesson for arrogant leaders today who don't pay any heed to the lessons of history. One suggestion - maybe revisit some of your punctuation. Thanks for the share.

Thanks for the excellent review and your perspective on the poem. There is a lesson to be learned here, I think. Every great empire has had its day, only to crumble into the dust from which it came. Only God endures. estory
