Ha, ha, ha. Happy Birthday to you, Barb, and I hope that your mom lives many more years. I'm with you. I'm saying No to digital currency. The banks are getting out of control. A few years ago, I was questioned why I was withdrawing $500 from the bank. My response, "Because it's my money." Really.

I'm saying No to electric cars, but a great big Yes to grandchildren. You have me beaten. My grandkids ages are between 18 months to 14 years
old. They are a joy, but also one of the reasons why I've been missing from FS for months.

I too would like to go back to work in some type of capacity, but I've decided that it's much safer to stay home than work in an office, mall, hospital, supermarket, movie-theatre, etc. Guns everywhere.

I hope that your birthday was great. Margaret ~ LateBloomer

Excellent essay, Barbara! It is full of truths and and insights and wisdom. And things that make you go, hmm? It's true that the more things change, the more they stay the same. Family is always what matters, and grandchildren are bonus gifts in this life. I love your line about retiring from retirement!

I dont understand
cryptocurrency and i hardly use my credit cards, my total debt is 93 dollars.

I like your phrase, retiring from retirement. Due to disability I retired early but I keep busy too.

I don't go to the gym, I go for walks alone or with my grandson.

I'm 65 years old and I'm healthy, other than the bipolar disorder, that is under control with medication.

Thank you for sharing

Well done!

Hello Barbara,
happy belated birthday! I've already crossed the seventy one mark and working rapidly towards seventy two. I have to say, it's no picnic, but it sounds like you're doing all the right things to stay healthy.
The push to eliminate cash is an ongoing thing. I read a book titled - The War Against Cash. It outlined what was going on and how if cash is eventually done away with, how much easier it is for the powers that be to control you. Of course if you express yourself along these lines, it causes many to label you a conspiracy theorist and a right wing nut. While I still can, I've invested in some assets that I think will always be in demand, like precious metals. My bank makes a big deal now about even getting some cash from them. I do use a credit card, but only when necessary. I agree about the electric vehicles too. The very people who want you to shake in your boots for fear of climate change are the ones who are pushing electric vehicles while at the same time refusing to address the child labor used to mine cobalt which is used for those batteries, which aren't recyclable and prone to catching fire. As you say, the list goes on and on. In any event, thanks for sharing your thoughts on turning 70. I hope you had a delightful birthday gal.
Have a blessed day.
Tom

As best as I can remember, 70 is not really, really old; I'm 80 now, so entering my 9th decade. I am trying to determine how to retire. I actually sold my agency a year ago and the new owners asked me to stay on and run for a year -- that was up in December, 2023. Now, they have asked for another year. The extra income is nice, but I am torn as to what I should be doing. I am trying to hear that still small voice that I have come to depend on over the years. But for some reason, I am finding difficult to get a straight answer. Hope your birthday was super and 2024 is a fabulous year! ann

Yeah, I'm right behind you. I think one thing I experienced was something my father told me; time seems to speed up when you get older. No sooner than you take down the Christmas ornaments, than you seem to be putting them back up again. The days, weeks and months fly by. And adjusting to change is hard. I am very skeptical of technology, I still use my phone mostly to run music in my car. And that's another thing I have to rant about: in the old days, I bought cd's, maybe spent $600 on my library. Now I have to spend $720 a year to listen to music in my car. One thing I have to say is that electric cars are no where near being adopted by the public at large. They are too impractical. There are not enough charging stations. People are opting for hybrid. The main scource of electricity today is not coal; it's natural gas. Clean and efficient. At Southern Co., we are nuclear. But gas is pretty cheap. estory

Did you really mean that our government was "fiscally responsible"? Also "coverted" should be "converted". Disregarding this, your article was spot on. I'm turning eighty in a few months, and I would like to think that I'm doing pretty well. I've had a couple of heart attacks and a minor stroke, but I still jog and produce firewood. My wife will probably find me down by the woodpile some day.

I loved these ramblings, Barbara, and welcome to the 8th decade of your life. Sorry, I know that's a crummy way to look at it, but we must stick together and stick to the truth here. :)

I joined the 70s club a couple of years ago, and you know what? It's not so bad. As long as you stay active, which it sounds like you're doing, keep at least a modicum of good health, keep your mind active, and enjoy your family and friends (including FanStory friends), then the 70s can be a great time of life.

Let's compare notes again when we reach our 80s! - Jim

I agree totally with you on all counts and I'm almost eight years older. A local credit union was urging people to take out loans on its sign today because it was like getting paid to buy things you want. What!!! My mother didn't speak to me for days when I turned fifty. You'd think I made her get old.

Hi Barbara,
Happy Birthday, Dear Lady. I didn't realize you're in Fort Hood. Not so far from meat all. I need to make it to one of your book signings!

Too funny about retiring from Retirement! I just need to retire from coming out of retirement and teaching again.

Great post. We were given a larger window into who you are as a person. At least you've kept your sense of humor. Some days it's hard to find.

Hugs,
Rhonda
