Behind The Fall

A fine poem in which you use the beaty of the waterfall as a metaphor for the facade we show the world to hide the truth that is concealed behind it. I loved that fourth stanza: "For concealed behind
the cascading cloak,
lies a sorrow unseen
dwelling in a deep,
dark reservoir,
bearing the weight
of every drop".

There is a wry, almost sardonic tone to this poem that, much life the grief to which the poem alludes, lurks just behind the veil--until the last lines. Excellent writing. I especially enjoyed "falling with grace/to soft froth."

I lived in western North Carolina for several years where there are many waterfalls there. I had a few favorites that I would hike to and sit and listen to the rushing water, the gurgling sounds and splash of the falls into a pool of water at the bottom.
This lovely poem took me back to those wonderful memories.

This is very beautiful, Jessica. I enjoyed reading every word. The use of the receptive line that ends your poem captures, again, the feel and flow of the beauty and uninterrupted flow of words and water. Well done and good luck!

I love a waterfall and love your poem about it. I could visualise everything that you were saying and the picture is perfect. I like to be able to 'feel' the words I am reading, and I felt yours. Thank you

Wow. Another splendid poem of yours! The imagery is brilliant, as usual... and I love how, beyond just describing the waterfall beautifully, you add an underlying message that can be applied to people... many people are pretty waterfalls, concealing some sorrow or heavy burden...

Your vivid use of words capture the emotions that arise when one is observing a waterfall. "A peaceful flow over jagged rocks" is a perfect line that creates a picture of the waterfall. Excellent free verse form about a part of nature that is worthy of poetic form. The beauty of waterfalls is unmatched.

Beautifully said! Yes, the waterfall is lovely to look at but what is happening behind it? You chose to use this as a metaphor for hurting people who put forward a strong and lovely facade for the sake of others. Hope this does well in the contest!!

But oh, how lovely
the water
falls
First off -- I loved your presentation. Free form is often humdrum in how it is showcased. Next -- the ambiance created is wonderful, if sad... This poem is beautifully evocative.

Mmm. Jeez. The last lines hit! I bet just about anyone can appreciate a well written closing. It just FEELS complete. I just see the entire poem (though perhaps by intention perhaps just how the english language is written) but how it goes from top to bottom like a waterfall, like a body of water just slowly making its way down from left to right. Definitely captivating.
Love the description.
Thanks for this masterful write!
New Year to you!!!
