Hi Brett,
thanks for this timely reminder. I give to a number of charities throughout the year. I use Charity Navigator to see how they spend the money, like how much goes to operate the charity and how much the administrator makes. While there are a number of creeps out there who are illegitimate, there is also a great need to assist those who have real needs, and charities are in the business of meeting those needs. By all means, be alert, but I hope people don't get so scared of getting ripped off that they forget to care for their fellow man. Thanks for sharing this.
Have a blessed evening.

Great advice for our fellow Fanstorians. As we know, they often target the elderly.
My mom just won a hundred dollars off a gym membership. Alls she has to do is pay a year ahead and they give her a hundred off next year. The trainer (salesman) has called her over twenty times in two days.
Most of the "round-up" charities at the fast food restaurants are giving 10%to the restaurant. That's a10% off the top from your contribution going to millionaire corporations.
Blatant buttholes! Would have been a better title. Just sayin.
Bless you

I think there is a special place in Hell for hacker, scammers and identity thieves. At least, I hope there is. Preying on people for money is disgusting. But scamming has been around forever. Telephone psychics, television preacher's, snake oil harkers back in the day. Everytime we get wise, they get wiser. Great info in here. Gretchen

Despise scammers with a passion. Appreciate the catch, your comments, and the review. Sometimes, you can read a piece, and re-read it over and over again, and still not catch things like misspelled words.

'Tis the season to be jolly ... careful. Your warning is timely and the practical information you've provided may help a few people to avoid the worst of these scams. Despicable, as you say. Thanks for posting.

Thanks for this warning about scammers. It was very detailed and chock full of information on how to avoid becoming a victim. Your position on scammers is crystal clear and helpful for those unsure how to proceed when solicited.

Yes, too right, Brett, scammers are everywhere these days. The Internet has become their sandpit to play in, and sadly, so many fall for it. I just hope it won't happen to me one day. But I'm suspicious of anything I don't recognise, whether we sites or telephone numbers. Well written piece. Ulla:)))

Folks should be told this several times a year. My spam mail has me winning 5.000,000,000 dollars on an oversea's sweepstakes which I must have filled out on my vacation. I haven't had one ever. I get priests from England waiting to send me money to my bank here if I can only verify my routing number. It goes on and on. Thanks for this. Karen

Well done, Bro. I can't believe the number of folks who fall for these "phishing" and other scamming schemes. We recently had one claiming we owed for a toll fee on a Motorway. Haha, We quit driving years before the date of the so-called unpaid toll! Finally getting out and about again see

AMEN Bro they are just as prevalent "Down Under" as I am sure they are, the world over. Just sad so many do get caught.
