This is a well rhymed, humorous Thanksgiving poem. After reading it, I still don't feel guilty. I'm going to cook and enjoy turkey regardless to how dumb Herky may have been. I hope you have a happy Thanksgiving and enjoy your Herky Turkey.

And after reading that there's one thing that's very clear.
I am so happy to eat turkey but then I feel horrible that the bird once had a family whenver I read something along the lines

I understand what you mean, but I wouldn't worry too much. I don't think they can remember who their family members are; they all look pretty much alike these days. :)

Very good humorous poem for the holiday, Jim. I just picked up my turkey today. He, also, didn't escape the chopping block. Have a great Thanksgiving.

LOL, Jim, the downside of this poem is that now I have a name to associate with eating Thanksgiving turkey. Dang, I'm eating poor ole Herky, who was too dumb...but he sure taste good. Good job. Terry.

Thanks, Terry. I'm glad I'm not a farmer who eats his animals for food for that reason. Must be kind of hard to eat your charges, especially when you've named them.

Good morning Jim,
I just love the crazy name Herky the turkey!!!
And such a fun story for Thanksgiving. If my memory serves me correctly you have used great names for another animals, etc. in your poems...

Thanks, Lisa. It seemed like a good name for a turkey along the lines of Nat the cat, Brian the lion, and Jake the snake.

Yes, all great names ... like Disney characters... Daffy Duck, and well, the drawfs!!

Well, very much a poem for the Americans as they prepare to celebrate Thanksgiving, and their escape from the horrors of England, Lol! Excellent rhyme and rhythm, of course, and most amusing, if tragic!

Yep, it this version of story, the turkey doesn't escape his fate like most turkey stories.

This did make me feel sorry for Herky, especially as he tried to trick the farmer so he wouldn't be cooked. A really well written piece, and I thought it was really entertaining as well.

Thanks so much, Jacob. It might have worked had the farmer not been tipped off.

Poor old Herky! What a thoroughly enjoyable romp through the barnyard. You employed some really nice rhymes here and created a lovely story with a moral centre - of sorts!! Thanks so much for the share.

lol. Poor turkeys - what a bad reputation. I feel sorry for them, living only to did and be eaten, as of course is the fate of most animals people eat. Anyway a humorous poem although I did hope he would escape because of his clever plan and not suffer the anticipated fate. Well done.

I guess he wasn't so clever after all because he gave himself away. Reminds me of the time when I was 6-years-old and walking down the sidewalk in town with my dad. I looked down and saw some money on the ground, picked it up, and shouted, "I found a $10 bill!" A lady came and grabbed it out of my hand, shouting, "It's mine, it's mine!" and walked off with it. If only I'd kept my mouth shut.

This is really cute. If not for the spies, Herky might have not become a dinner for the family. But as you say, if he didn't have to die, he could enjoy being the highlight of the day.

Thanks, Carol. Yeah, testing out the plan may not have been the smartest thing to do. I guess he won't make that mistake again.
