I love the use of that great old song to finish off your write about the masks we hide behind. Maybe you will find others will be glad to drop the false bravado also. Look after yourself Wendy.

Thank you very much, Kahpot. We all choose to wear masks at times, and at times it is appropriate.
I greatly appreciate the six stars, and also your good wishes.

I thoroughly understand how you feel about wearing fake masks. You have expressed it well, in your contest entry. I currently don't care to be exposed to the woes of others. Not that I don't care. I can be brought to tears in just a few minutes based on things I'm experiencing in my own life.
I recently went to a luncheon with buddies that exercised together prior to Covid. Everyone was well masked, laughing and cheering. I now use a cane, and recently lost my younger sister. With a smile on my face, I silently felt out of place. They may have also. We possibly all wore fake masks.
I like your take on mask wearing. Best wishes in the contest.

Thank you very much for your insightful review. Yes, one has to discern whether it?s better to simply reflect quietly rather than expose our inner grief and or distress which really is burdening others unnecessarily. Others may well be going to a function in order to escape the reality of their own issues for a while, and there is a place for that and some good in it too. Yet I too would have felt out of place last night, and would have not been able to enjoy the evening. The question of the masks we all wear is fascinating. Sometimes older people lose all their social filters and can then be hurtful, even cruel. Perhaps better for them to wear a mask of politeness ?. Interesting. Many thanks.

Hello Wendy,
I wish I had one more six. They don't give us enough. As we progress as writers, I think there should be more sixes to be awarded. That being said, this was excellent. I thought at first that you were referring to the physical mask that was thrust upon us during Covid. Then I realized you were speaking of the outward mask that so many people wear to hide their pain or whatever. When I lived on the farm so many years ago, I had developed a reputation for speaking what was on my mind, which was often contrary to the general spirit of the place. When people got disillusioned and ready to leave, they often came over to speak to me, knowing that I would be in agreement with them. I think it's always best to be truthful in our feelings. That being said, sometimes a party is just what we need to have a change of pace. I'm glad that you mentioned your foster son again. I sometimes forget who all has asked for prayer on this site, I'm sorry. I hope and pray that he will have a rapid recovery.
God bless and keep you gal.

Thank you Tom for your lovely review, and you are right. But there are times when simply being alone is so much easier than trying to be upbeat, not wanting to spoil others? fun. It?s a balance. I don?t mask what I believe, but I often do with my emotions. But this time I was a bit too fragile. I appreciate your very thoughtful review.

This is beautifully written. You are right when we bump into someone we haven't seen for a while we are superficially friendly wearing out invisable mask as we pretent everything is good in our world. Parties aren't about comforting anyone who may be suffering. They are about fun and laughter and at least pretending all is right in your world. I know your are hurting inside. I was hoping the boy would have improved. My thoughts at prayers go out to you and him.

Thank you Beth. I appreciate your understanding and insight. When we are a bit fragile, we don't want to go somewhere to spoil things for others by being upset or withdrawn. He is still seriously ill, but perhaps making a very slight improvement. We'll see what this week brings. Many thanks for your prayers. Thank you for the gift of six beautiful stars, very meaningful.

Well done. I love the last line which is from the pop hit of the 60s where she sings "It's my party and I'll cry if I want to."
You really wrote the truth when you said that friends stay superficial at parties. Only if they really care and are true close friends do they want to know how you really feel.
I love the reference to the song and how you stated completely and sincerely how you were doing.

Thank you for sharing this contest entry with us. So many of us wear masks. During COVID we had a ZOOM high school class reunion. I was pretty much silent as I listened to how wonderful all my former classmates' lives were perfect. A few months later I was visiting my mom, and my brother, Dan was there. He was only one year behind me in school and asked about certain people. After I filled him in, I mentioned how they were all really successful and their children were doing great. He stared at me and then said something to the effect that I taught first grade and made changes in children lives. That I successfully raised four boys while my husband was in the military, often gone, and through countless moves. I also held the family together while all this military stuff happened and still have a strong family. My brother humbled me. No, I don't need to wear a mask. I'm a worthy person. I appreciate this post and good luck with the contest.

Your brother was so right. Your wisdom and compassion have changed countless children's lives, including your own, and the effects will be lasting through the generations. Much more worthwhile than worldly fame or success. Thank you for reviewing, and for the good wishes.

This is so well written, along with being honest. We all wear masks sometimes, but it's good to know that among those who love us there is no need. I hope there is the best outcome for your former foster son.

What a fabulous story. I find that a very large percentage of people are only interested in talking about themselves. I guess this is a true story and my heart goes out to you. This is a very good interpretation of the mask prompt. Good luck in the competition. Jen.
