Thanks, Brett, for educating me into what must be an icon of American journalism. Brits are not so aware of Doonesbury - but it sounds like it wouldn't travel beyond 'shore to shining shore'. And that is a pity, because satire is a favorite with us - and, given sufficient explanation, we might have espoused it. But, I doubt it, because at the time it was strong in the States, interest over here might have been waning for all things politically Stateside.

Had I been American, on the other hand, it would have been with me every day, along with the weak coffee (mine has to dissolve the spoon) and donuts.

I wondered about the dog until I read the caption: 'None' to go with 'Doon'?
That the cartoon should be so complex and still immediate is a tribute to the compilers. Your masterful history is so very helpful and informative - I had to read it twice to make sure I got it all. I'm sure that Americans will not be so obtuse!

I think I might come back for another dose of this.

Paul

I always loved Doonesbury! His take on our society was funny and profound. My dad loved him as well. My father is the one who turned me on to his political comic strip in the daily newspaper.
Your information on his awards especially the Pulitzer prize is amazing! I had no idea he was that influential.
Thanks for sharing and I will watch for the next installment of Doonesbury's controversies.
Jesse
