Glad you enjoyed this posting. Appreciate the review.

I remember when Shulz added Franklin and my grandson (who I raised and is Black) seemed impressed. I certainly was. This is a good article and reminds some of us what it was like when Franklin appeared. I just wish that attitude wasn't around anymore at all.

I'm a huge fan of comic book art. Some are as simple as a few lines and some resemble the Mona Lisa. I've never paid much attention to the social or political aspect though. I remember when Franklin was introduced in Peanuts. Another interesting and educational piece. Gretchen

Brett, I'm really enjoying this series - and hope I can review all of your blogs.
We enter territory here where I have no experience or expertise - so I am really glad to learn so much about black comics (if that's an acceptable term). Children accept what's in front of them - and in the 1950s I was reading 'Eagle' which had state of the art illustration throughout - but it did not have anything other than Anglo-Saxon characters.
I don't remember seeing an African origin person right up to the sixties - although, in the Rupert Bear comics and annuals (a VERY popular character in the UK from the thirties onward) Rupert certainly had Chinese friends - boys and girls. Now I remember that, I feel it was significant.
I am delighted to hear that Charles Schultz did so much to promote inter-racial understanding; Peanuts is one of my favorite cartoons.
Looking forward to your next blog.
If you research 'Rupert Bear' he was the creation of one of the great British newspapers The Daily express. Mary Tourtel created him in 1920 and the famous Annuals were published for the Christmas market from 1936 onward.
Best wishes, Paul

This is a very well-written and informative posting on an important subject. I felt a bit nostalgic with the mention of Peanuts and Charles Schultz. Like this writing, he also brought attention to how everyone should be treating others with respect.

I think Charles M. Schulze did a lot to advance a lot of social adjustments for society. I have used some of his comic strips while teaching. Kids could relate to them. Thank you for educating us.

Looking back on comic strips, where they began, and where they've gone today. Times have certainly changed in ways that we would have never thought possible. Thanks for sharing.
