Thank you for sharing this information with us. I didn't know it. I remember my dad reading the comics in our daily newspaper and the colored comics in the Sunday edition. We've quit taking newspapers because my husband would get angry with all the liberal nonsense. I enjoyed reading this.

It's hard for me to believe that newspapers are falling by the wayside daily. I used to read three or four different papers every day, on a hit and miss basis for sure. But now what used to be full publications, have now become merely a few pages. Thanks for sharing.

This article, Sunday Supplement, is interesting and informative. Everything has to start somewhere, I guess, and competition has always been the best incentive to effect change.

Lo well this brought back some amazing memories of being a child. The only thing we ever looked at in dad's newspaper. Andy Capp. The Perishers. I don't subscribe to a newspaper now so don't know if they are still going.

The only color I ever saw in a comic strips was in the Sunday paper. The comic strip on Sunday weren't a part of a suppliment. The supliments I'm familiar with came along much later and were various articles of interest and ads and movie star features.

Thanks, Brett. I'm really enjoying this series - but I gave you all the British background last time.
Sunday supplements soon caught on, It seems, with the obvious day of leisure to entertain the kids, who in turn, would push their parents into a rock solid fan base. Very effective marketing.
As you say, before that, limited post-read usage, save for the fish'n'chips - but not forgetting the neatly cut rectangles of newsprint attached to the toilet wall with a hook. Waste not, want not. (Notices which said 'Use Both Sides' were normally discounted.)
Surprising that color was used as long ago as 1894, but not surprising that this saw a huge surge in sales. This, presumably was just before the introduction of the movie film, and I wonder just how much those early comic strips were an influence on what was made for kids to watch.
Fascinating and well written.

Color in 1894? I would have thought it much later, certainly after the turn of the century.
Interesting piece of history, my friend. Thank you for sharing these!
