I have to say this story saddened me. Years ago my grandmother was in a snake pit of a nursing home. When we saw her she cried to come home. It was heartbreaking and even today I wonder if we could have done more for her.

Yes it is sad but for my cousin she is in a nice place. She lived with her daughter for years and made life miserable for both them. She is actaully doing better and not complaining nearly as mush as she was when she with her daughter. She been in a foul mood all her life.

What makes this so funny is because it all rings true. Maybe exaggerated truth, but that's why its funny because we all can, (cane) relate. LOL. And then there's a serious side to all of this. If someone lived their whole life independent and then gets stuffed into a communal place, you shouldn't expect her to be happy!

Thanks for the review. I didn't have to exaggerate it very much. I just combinded the comment of two different ladies. I'm glad you found it funny.

This story made me sad. It is, of course, very well written and the dialogue is more than just believable -- I could hear the voices. If I ever reach the spot where I cannot avoid such a setting, I hope I have airplane fare to Oregon. I understand assisted suicide is legal there!
I did see the flashes of humor in the situation and, at that time in life, it is even more important to see them. Good post and good luck in the contest. ann

And people think dying is the worst thing ever. It can't compare with being stuck in one of those places and having to watch all the deteriorating minds around you, and wondering if they are better or worse off than you. Thanks for sharing.

I didn't mean to scare anyone with this but a few have found it more disturbing than funny. Actually the cousin who make these crazy phone calls was far more upset when she lived next door to her daughter. I think she really likes it better where she is than before
Thanks for the review and comments.

At the same time, I chuckled and scrunched my nose. Great piece of flash in believable dialogue-only format. Thank you for sharing, Beth, and best wishes in the contest.

Oh dear. Yes, there are disadvantages to being in a zoo with old people! She sounds mentally bright, and it must be hard for those with the need for physical care to be stuck with those whose minds have gone ... Great story. Bet wishes for yor entry.

Thank you Wendy. This is loosely based on a cousin who calls me regularly. She's actually 94 and in better shape than most around her.

Now this was funny. Poor lady almost became the public toilet. I liked the back and forth of the conversation was distinct and showed two very different characters. Very humorous. Gretchen

Thank you Gretchen. This is based on a cousin who calls me regularly. I have some other longer posts about her phone calls. I'm glad you found it funny. She's always upset about something.

Knowing some I have been in to visit, I doubt not this is fiction, but if you say so I take your word for it. LOL Reme minds me of the place my sister was in. Best to you, Beth.

Thank you for the great review and six stars. It is partial fiction the part about the man using her garbage can is from my aunt in Mississippi the old guy came in more that once and used her garbage can. She hit him over the head with her cane. The other is from a cousin who is a nursing home. She is actually 94 and she calls me all the time. I've got other funnier stories of her calls.

Thanks Terry. I'm closer to it than you are. I get some really hilarious calls from a cousin. I've written about them before. This one I cut short for the 150 word count.

Oh my that would have me demand he leave as well even if I was ninety-seven
I don't know
The form for
A
Flash fiction but 150 characters it better be quick.

Thanks Tom. It is 150 words so I had to cut it short, but I've written longer and funnier ones based on phone calls I get from a cousin.
