I was in Michigan only once or twice, but don't recall being in Shelby. What a beautiful place to live1 As a child in the fifties, also, I loved nature and would have loved to be in a place like Shelby, but my parents were city people and didn't even want to live where there were no sidewalks.

Thank you. I could never live in a city. I love nature, and I spent hours roaming my dad's farm when I was a child. It was just me and a dog named Tiny.

Prior to her death, we had a wonderful home in a small country town, Hilliard,Florida. They never got hurricanes and it was like "Petticoat Junction". Now, 'm in assisted living in Jacksonville, one of the largest cities around!

Wow...
In the method described, Shelby, Michigan does seem like a place I would retire to. Between the spring and autumn colors to the family styled restaurants, you certainly got me intrigued. The one item that would put me over the top would be Country Dairy Restaurant, which serves homemade ice cream made from the cream of their own cows.

I love ice cream.

Best of luck in the contest. This seems like a sure contender to me.

Thank you. Country Dairy is a real dairy farm. They bottle their own milk, have a gift store and diner, as well as give guided tours. They took farming to the extreme. If the price of milk goes down, they still have ample income.

It sounds beautiful in every way and you were indeed fortunate to have lived there through your childhood - and you are still close enough to visit regularly. You described it beautifully. Best wishes for the contest.

Shelby, Michigan is a hidden gem. In fact, minus the winters, the entire state of Michigan is a special place.

When I lived in California I found myself really missing the beautiful fall colors. Now orange is my favorite color and autumn my favorite time of the year.

Thanks for your story and good luck in your contest!

Thank you. I lived in California for a year, and I hated it. I love Michigan and never intend to leave again.

An excellent, well-expressed tribute to Shelby. You've included so much colour in your beautiful description about nature and I particularly enjoyed how you compare the hard work of cherry-picking and asparagus harvesting in the fifties to the modern day more efficient mechanisation of the present. This in turn brings depth of interest and understanding to the reader about your home town. Comparisons and contrasts regarding the buildings and infrastructure past and present also achieve great effect. All in all a delightful, informative read! Good luck! Debbie

Thank you. Shelby is a lovely place to live. Some may not care for the winters, but even in winter there are a lot of things to do. There is skiing, snowmobiling, and other fun activities.

Thank you. Shelby is a peaceful community to live in. I especially love the rolling hills of the countryside.

This work has reached the exceptional level

Any town that still hosts something like an asparagus parade and crowns an asparagus queen is a real tribute to old-time America. My hometown in Indiana did similar things, mostly around the 4th of July, but I think they've gotten away from a lot of that.

Shelby sounds like a wonderful place to grow up, and even a great place for a tourist to visit!

Where you talk about U.S. 31, you say it "was still only two lands" when it moved east. Do you mean lanes?

You've done a really good job of telling us about your town - then and now - and why you love it so much. Thanks for sharing Shelby with us.

Thank you, and thanks for catching my booboo. I have edited and corrected the error. Shelby is a lovely and quiet place to live. I hope to return soon. I'm seventy-seven, so I best do it soon.

Your article has given me two new goals in life: 1) Win the Lotto; 2)Move to Shelby!
What a great article - if this doesn't win I shall be astonished. Worth a six at least - if only I had one left.
This was beautifully written - a superior piece of journalism in any good Michigan magazine! People will flock to the place when they read this.

You have given us so much to admire - the trees alone would make me visit every spring and autumn - and the vegetables you have! In the UK we have a lot of cooking/chef programs on tv. My favorite is a Cornishman called 'Rick Stein' (famous for his seafood recipes) - and a few days ago we visited an asparagus farm! No wonder workers have sore backs - but your machines are new to me. The story of the whole family involved in cherry picking, with all the detail is fascinating - also the fact that so little has changed, compared with bigger towns and cities.

And you have been precise in balancing the old with the new: the huge processing plant and the new hospital, the evolutionary changes in the road system - while many shops are still identifiably as they were fifty years ago. This lovely juxtaposition is utterly beguiling.
Now, where did I put that Lotto ticket?
Loved it.

Thank you. Good luck with winning the lottery. When you move to Shelby make sure you go to Debbie's eatery on the weekend and I might see you there.

You make Shelby sound ideal. The hectic life found in cities can be left behind and the people are friendly. It's one of those places we admire but seldom see. The fact you think you will go back there to live says a lot about how much you like it.
This is a good entry for the contest. Best of luck.

Your description of your hometown shows your fondness for where you grew up. Moving away, and then returning years later, shows just how much the area has either improved or declined. This story shows the growth and possibilities of a growing community. Good luck in the contest.

Thank you. Shelby is a lovely place to live. I think it stays small because it is a farm-based community. The high-paying industrial jobs are a long drive away. There is plenty of work at Peterson's and in the harvest times, but these jobs are mostly lower pay and filled by migrants and the other Mexicans in the area.
