You keep everyone's dignity, and you're true to their characterizations. Again, you maintain your equilibrium between "sad" and "extremely sad" but never, ever dip into "melodramatically sad." It's all very real and understandable and, best of all, relatable.
Great job.

Thanks so much. I'm happy you feel this way. Next chapter is how I want to believe things happen so bear with me on it. I really appreciate this, Rachelle. Gretchen

You know I trust your writer's instincts implicitly.

Shiver down the back of the neck. Almost teared up. I'm going to miss her too. You've done this beautifully. I almost don't want to read the next one.
Sniff.

How very difficult for him. I am pleased that Iris is in no pain, and also that she knows he is there with her. I did wonder about Heston. He seems to have accompanied Jameson to the hospital but he wouldn't normally be allowed inside.
I hope iris's passing will be "easy". Beautifully written with great sensitivity.

Thank you. I'll double check but I thought I mentioned Jameson coming alone to the hospital. Thanks for that. Gretchen

Wow, this chapter sure hits home with anyone who has ever had to be with someone they care about nearing the end. Helpless as we are, we just want them to know we are there. Thanks for sharing

Thanks. Something we all have in common. Losing someone important. Gretchen

Oh, wow. This is tense. You have the reader waiting right along with Jameson for the last breath, knowing it will ultimately come, but wishing we could somehow forestall it. Her blood pressure is down. That's a good sign, isn't it? Just give us a little more time. Maybe another squeeze of the hand. Whoa!

Thanks, Jay. Blood pressure going down is a good sign but not going to change the outcome. Two more chapters. Gretchen

I'm crying again. You big meanie. I see two or three more installments. The next one she slips away there is the funeral where he meets her friends, and she has a lot who tell him stories. The next one, he finds out about the will, he delays acceptance until the divorce is final. Iris taught him well. And the last one, is ten years from now where he is married, has a nice career with two dozen books to his credit, His most famous multi- award winning book "IRIS" is still stocking the shelves. His son is a teenager, and he has a little girl named Iris. Just my view. I haven't spent more that 30 minutes on here today counting my email. My poor hand.
Could have been so much worse, Love ya, Karen

Two more chapters then it's done. Sorry. Thanks for this. Those are all good suggestions but it finished this last year. I'm just posting and editing now. Gretchen

Did you write it as a novel from the start? Or was it always to be a series? I am in the process of chopping up Alistar Adams and lisa is helping edit me "poor woman" My first time. It was hard at first seeing all my mistakes, and once you are told, It becomes obvious you were a huge nitwit. I plod forward. Your writing is magnificent. You don't need my help, I just get these pictures in my head, that's how involving your stories are. Love ya, Karen

Okay if this is a true story, you made my cry because I recently went through something similar, and the nurse is true the one that are suffering are the people that are left behind, watching helpless as they loved ones fade away.

Yes. The survivors have to carry on. Thank you for this nice review. Gretchen
Comment from Debbie D'Arcy
Your story continues so skilfully that, right now, I seem to be inextricably woven into Jameson's character, feeling his fear, tension and disbelief! Everything about the dialogue, especially from the medical staff, is spot-on. A very dramatically credible read! Thanks for sharing, Gretchen! Debbie

I've been told that is the last of your senses you lose, the sense of hearing. She did squeeze his hand a little, so at least she knows she's not alone. This is so sad, yet so nicely written, Gretchen, you certainly get into the heart of their feelings. Not only that, you know how to write it down in a way that you show us and don't tell. Well done, my friend. :)) Sandra xx

Thank you so much. Two more chapters and this is done. Tough to say goodbye to these two characters. Gretchen

I agree with Jameson, the job of watching over someone who is dying must be a tough job, but as they say, "Somebody has to do it, it's a 'living'." I'm assuming Iris is dying, and Jameson, who has so recently found a friend, is about to lose her, how will he cope, beautifully written, blessings Roy
