I feel the same way about technology. If I watch some one do it and they let me do it while they watch and guide, I've usually got it but don't tell me on the phone or expect me to read something. It's to complicate for this brain that balks and all that technical language.

Absolutely. I like the "kiss" method in general.
Have a great day.

Lol. Yes I understand perfectly. What is wrong with a simple key these days? It doesn't require super powers to insert it in the lock and then turn it!! Well written. I enjoyed your piece a lot.

Thank you, Wendy for reading and supporting me. Also for the correction!
Yup, a hood old fashion lock and key works everyone (unless the key breaks in the lock) yikes!

This is the digital age, John. When we moved into our house seven years ago, they told us it was a smart home. Everything could be operated from our smart phones, including doors, window, appliances, grass sprinklers, and any new gadgets we wanted to install. Ha! We're now in our seventies, so we left our home dumb. We use a remote for the garage, and a digital code for the front door. That's it. I can easily relate to your experience. Like you, we'll remain in our old ways.

I agree with you on a lot of this, John. And I'm an ex-computer guy. Some of the gadgets these days, although they may seem hip and cool to the younger crowd, are really just ways to make us lazy humans even lazier. But I think there is a point of diminishing returns where the advantage of many of these gadgets is practically nil, and the disadvantages (like not working, as you noticed) outweigh any small advantage they may have.
Guess I'm just a fuddy-duddy too, when it comes right down to it. Oh well, let these millennials and gen exers have their fun, and with all the time they save with their gizmos and gadgets, they can have more time to play video games and watch reality TV and other constructive things.

Ah, Jim. Great review and so well said about the gizmos and other gadgets our millennials fell in love with.

LOL. John, this is outstanding writing. I do not have a family left. I don't know these issues. But your writing carried me every inch of the way with you, and I felt your frustration from many miles away. But mostly I laughed, as it was funny. Well done. Terry.

Good work.
Myself, I'm in fourth-and-a-half grade. I'm okay on the computer (about as good as any fourth grader) as long as nothing goes wrong. To my credit, when things go amiss, it is, indeed, the program's fault. Hah!
Best wishes.

Then just call a fifth grader to come and fix the problem! All you have to do is give him/her a bowl of ice cream afterwards.
Easy-peasy?

The more things change the harder it becomes. Honestly, a key should at least be a backup in case the power goes out. Maybe that is just me. I can see the future excuses for not being to work on time. Power off, locked in the house with no way out. Or maybe the AI hid the key for fun.

When we sign up to high tech without a full understanding of it, we end up being locked out of our houses and cars and unable to make anything work. We are moving into a world where robots run our lives and they don't always work John. I empathise and I just want to unlock my door with a manual key and I am stuck in my old ways and will not budge! Ha ha ha, many will identify with your words here, love Dolly x

Yup. Unfortunately those who will identify with my words are those whose age begins with 6-7-8?s.
Yikes?
Dolly, you?re the best!

You have absolutely convinced me that I don't want a high tech home. That is worrisome if one gets locked out or if there is a power outage and you need a manual entry. Nope. A key or keypad would be best for me and the garage door opener!
Cindys house 4:15, (Cindy's)
we're to damn old (too)
I confused the locks brain (lock's)

Cheers to those keys!

Yes! And cheers to garage door openers, except during a power outage...

Yup. Was it on Romper Room (I?m really dating myself), they sung, ?bend and stretch, reach for the sky.?.
Well in this case we-
Bend and stretch, open the garage door?
Yikes!

Lol. I vaguely remember Romper Room but I didn't know English then so probably didn't understand what they were saying.

"I think I'll remain stuck in my ways. Let the world pass me by. The next time we have the opportunity to watch Jackson, I'll ask for the garage door opener from the get-go.". If I were you I would just discreetly make a copy of that, so you are save if they decide to throw out this last dinosaur. Thank you for sharing this funny story.
