"Would it not be so much easier to just go home, put on the stupid mask, and then set out again? " -- I wonder how many people actually have this thought. Good fiction always has an element of truth to it, and your story has it, in spades, IMHO!
Your surprise ending was a delight!

I guess we learned to see everyone differently during the pandemic, unable to see their facial expressions from the eyes down. But like you said, it didn't take us long to figure out what the eyes were saying. Thanks for sharing.

When my wife was alive, one of the things that attracted me to her was she was unafraid not to wear that mask. i just had a biopsy on my face and was going to stay inside today, but your story inspired me to be unashamed to step outside.

That?s good. If you wish to go out, do so. People will understand. I had a friend who invited a girl out and she wore so much makeup he insisted she scrub it off before they left her home. He wanted to know and love the real her. They?ve been married for nearly fifty years. Thank you very much for reviewing.

Thank you for writing and your encouraging story.

Well done! A great take on the brief which I enjoyed reading. Your prose is faultlessly written in clear text and the thought process throughout is skilfully and effectively expressed. Your conclusion was slightly given away when you referred to them smiling back, therefore obviously not completely covered by a mask. I wonder if you might be able to adapt that a little? But an excellent contender and I wish you good luck! Debbie

I think you did an excellent job with the writing prompt. I can relate to that. It does feel better to not wear make up. The 1980s were all about makeup . I'm so glad less makeup is actually okay now, for me, but also for girls and women in general. A creative great idea, to which women will relate. Best wishes!

A mask that hides the true self just to blend with the others, but once your true self comes to life nothing can stop you now. Thank you for sharing and good luck with the contest.

This writing also spiel a lot to me because I felt a lot of things that the person in the story is feeling. I graduated highschool in the prime Covid year of 2020, and everyone was always afraid to be anywhere without a mask. You killed this writing prompt. Keep writing!
