Nice artwork and story to go with it, aryr. You do a good job describing the pillow and how it is important to you and that you still have it. Your ex-spouse didn't exactly have good timing to announce a split on New Year's Day, and then said you could "go ahead and leave." It sounds like you wanted to get as far away from Alabama as you could, and I don't blame you. It must have been a great adventure to get there so fast. I can't imagine that! I like your ending and am glad you are settled and still have your pillow. Thanks for sharing your story.

It took me three paragraphs to realize which of you two were the wife and husband, and then see the mention of the club you wrote this donation for. Glad for your happiness in the Dakotas, though isn't it tough climatically going from the warmth of the South to the frigidness of winters, there?

When I read the title, this isn't the story I expected. I'm glad your happy place is your pillow, because despite circumstances, your happy place can be wherever you lay your head. Sometimes, it's better to be on your own to do as you see fit. I wish you all the best in your new home.

How very cruel to announce that to you on New Year's day, out of the blue that you were to divorce, and then you had to travel a long way on your own. I think you might be better off without him and someone as cold as that is best keeping his distance. I am glad you have your happy place pillow with you and I hope you have a wonderful life. So, anywhere your pillow is, you are happy! Despite how your circumstances came to be, you can still be happy and enjoy a fabulous adventure. I hope you're taking lots of notes and journaling because this could become a great book idea:-)

Interesting. It is a short telling, without much detail or showing. Is there some word limitation you are under? This is good but I think more context in the showing department would make it better.
Although, because it is of a woman, striking out on her own after a bad marriage, I think it will go over well with the female readers, who will instantly empathize. So that's good too.

Surprise to me, when we finished with the SUV, I was surprised that he announced, I was to go ahead and leave.

Surprise to me, when we finished packing, he announced, I was to leave.
It was a day of adventure.
- We aren't shown any adventure to justify this line.
I have spent almost 6 months in my efficiency and I love it. I still have my Happy Place pillow having added it to my various items and I am so glad.
- After the first sentence, we are told you love it. (we don't know why) And we are told you are glad to have the Happy Pillow. (we don't know nor are shown why)
