This is well written. I am surprised Kilian can read and write in 1247. Further surprised that he would point out Lard was illiterate (weren't most people) or that Lard would want to learn. Also, when Kilian found Lard asleep, that just didn't search him and take the scroll.

According to my research, the literacy rate among peasants in the middle ages was below 20%, but that says that about 1 in 5 could read and write. Mrs. Pauls and Mr. Papin were two of the lucky ones who could, and they taught their children like good parents.
Kilian felt sorry for Lard and felt badly about having teased him. His goal was not only to get the scroll back, but to offer to teach Lard at the same time. I haven't planned anything beyond that, but it does seem like I should work Lard's being able to read into the plot somehow. I'll have to think about how to do it. The main bit about reading was so that Kilian could write Arie a poem, but I think now that I should make more of it. Thanks for sparking this idea, Lance, and thanks for the good review.

What a nice thing to do, doing someone a favour and being gracious enough to lose for the sake of goodness are wonderful traits. to possess, I think they call that humility, even if one could beat someone anytime one wanted, just love the backstory Jim, well done, blessings Roy

Thanks very much, Roy. Kilian is a good soul and wants to help his friend. Fortunately, Lard saw the wisdom of dropping the teaching of Rube too from the bet, as that would probably tax even a professional teacher.
