This is a thoughtful piece about mixed marriages and families. I can't believe we're still discussing this like it's a "thing" to be discussed even in 2023. We have evolved little in my 68 years.

In my family, it is not color, but sexual preference. When I mention that my sister-in-law is married to another woman, I still get inquisitive looks and questions regarding how I feel about that. Here's how I feel: I don't give a rat's ass about who marries whom and what color they happen to be. If they are happy and kind to others, God bless them!

Thanks for opening up this important discussion.

Pam

Your wise response is noteworthy, wise and to be totally respected. Your wise and mature response is welcome and saluted.

I really like how your thought-filled writing gives facial expressions, movements and feelings to your characters. (Did that make sense? I hope so.) Your story flowed naturally and was easy to follow from beginning to end.

I hate racism on any level and from any angle. It's just wrong. And, though DNA can be enlightening, it really shouldn't matter. God made and loves each and every one of us.

Good story, Nomi!
Gale

I agree we are all related in some way, we just don't know exactly how, but that's okay. God loves ALL of us. Thank you for sharing.

Nicely observed story, Nomi. As a Brit, I have no historical moral high ground! From most great seaports, like Bristol an Liverpool, more than four million African people were transported to the Caribbean and the Americas - and when William Wilberforce eventually got his bill through Parliament, the slave owners were paid the equivalent of billions of dollars in reparations.
I have good friends in Louisiana, whom I visited in the 1980s; LA had at that time the highest percentage black population of any US state, but as we were driving one day, my host remarked, 'No black people go there - they would be shot on sight!' - and he was not joking. In 1984!
So many horror stories have come out of America in the last few years (we have others - just as bad) that it is hard to believe that attitudes are really changing. In multicultural London, it is rare to hear a story like this, but we are not perfect.
Your story works on several levels - the original casual, ignorant racism displayed by John challenged by the irony of the family connections, is a salutory story; we don't really feel sympathy for John, but we should be vigilant for any of us could fall below the standard of open mindedness. We are privileged to have friends or family members of different ethnicities. Thank you for your challenging article.

Thank you so much. This flies in the face of one reviewer who said the story was too cliched. Most truths are cliched, by the very fact that they are true to life.

Good thing that reviewers are all different!

I think your story underscores an interesting thought. Why would someone "look down" on another individual? I will offer this observation. In your story, it was John who deserved to be looked down upon because of his actions. You did offer some hope he learned something.

Well done, cousin. Terry.

After traveling all week for the last two weeks I've stayed behind on reviewing. So, I apology for the late and off topic review. I just wanted to make sure I didn't miss anything. Thanks for sharing.

This is a sterling example of the bias that exists in a society that still has a large faction looking to segregate all people who do not conform to the fantasy people of whom they believe they are members.

If a fairy godmother were to grant me three wishes, one of them would surely be that this colour thing would go away. I am sure it will one day, but it seems to be taking a very long time indeed.

Brief and appropriate.

I've been saying that all my life. We're all related just as you said. However, I have learned that racism occurs on all sides. Me, I like hearing about other cultures and their lives.

Yes, the desire to feel superior to someone is a deadly sin that will bring down many who fall victim to this sickness.

Thank you for this very important story. And yes, you're right that some of the people who don't know that they might even be part nonwhite are some of the most prejudiced. I can't understand why so many Hispanics are in the Proud Boys and other racist organizations! We all have the same ancestor - Noah and before him, Adam!

This points out very clearly the ignorance that infects the prejudiced.
