Your poem made me cry, tears for your brother-in-law and tears for his very loved wife. And, tears in remembrance of my dear mother-in-law who died after many years with Alzheimer's and my dear father-in-law who stood by and loved her much like Owen did for Billie
I love every stanza for each one offers exquisite detail and example of the love Owen had for Billie, what he gave, what he sacrificed. I liked all the 'you were's' for they were full of thought and creativity.
Truly beautiful!

A sorrowful, and beautiful
story of devotion and love in
a long and happy marriage.
My late husband passed away at 59 unexpectantly, so
I know what loss feels like.
This is a loving and tender
story about an elderly married
couple still in love. Best wishes and warmest regards.

Wow. A complete story told through your poem. The ending fits though I wish it hadn't been such a sad ending. I wish you the best of luck with the contest.

I wish I had six stars to award you. But I have the power of one vote, and I'll exercise it right after this!! Beautifully constructed poem, solemn, sad and heartbreaking. But also heartwarming, when we discover the selflessness of that man!!
Great post!!

You did a great job, Mystery Author, with this heartfelt
tribute to your brother-in-law. Your words painted a true
picture of his love and devotion to his wife in sickness
and health. Your words flowed smoothly with instances
of internal rhyme and alliteration. The imagery was super.
I believe Billie knew Owen was gone, even with her health
issues, and died of a broken heart.
Thanks for sharing and best wishes in the contest, Jan

This is a lovely poem of caring and sharing, of being two and yet one. That your brother-in-law could be so much to his wife is true love and companionship. It is not surprising that she followed him into the next life.

This is an absolutely wonderful poem about a loving couple. It touched my heart deeply, because my husband was the one who did all those things for me as well. When I was first in touch with him, he touched my life. He was the wind beneath my wings and I so much miss him today. Patricia

Comment from Debbie D'Arcy
It is so sad when you hear about this selfless man and all he did for his wife to make her life as safe and fulfilled as he possibly could. When he died and then she died so soon afterwards, perhaps this is the strongest indication of all of how totally invaluable he was as a husband and carer. As though the two hearts were interlinked and inseparable. Your verse is a wonderful tribute to a great man who couldn't feel prouder of your sentiments here. Thanks for sharing and good luck! Debbie

65 years! Wow, that's amazing. I can't imagine loosing your life partner of 65 years, for better or for worse. Dementia is a pervasive illness. Excellent story poem.
Good luck in the contest.

Gyspy, we are coming up on 40. Seeing 65 will be a strech for both of us. But if we can keep our wits about ourselves what the heck...we should go for it. 😊😊
