Well written. Keeps readers engaged. Resembles human emotion and challenges but also memories that shape who one is today. I like how you added a new perspective to the date and its meaning. The journey of high school along what come after. Symbolizing life's indeniable journey. Well said!

Hi Debi,
I have really enjoyed reading this and I have also learned a lot. The truth is I don't know much about Minnesota.
Unfortunately I've run out of sixers.
BTW, who is Glenn, if I may ask? And where you able to go to the graduation ceremony in the end?

Hi,
Sorry it's taken me so long to answer. I've been very busy lately and feeling a bit down. Nothing serious, just the end of the school year: I never agree with my workmates because I think they are too strict. Different criteria, but it's tough because in the Certificate exams we have to decide the marks together (there are usually two teachers per panel).
Take care

This was very well-written and entertaining, especially at you were so honest about the effect of the law. I did about the same thing on my 21st birthday and still regret it, although I never told my fianc© about it as he was working that night. I suspect I agree with your attitude toward cannabis. It's legal in Illinois and no one can find anyone who can pass the drug test to hold badly needed job applicants.

Oh yes, the ruts in my life that alcohol caused are still scars in my life, but I haven't had a drink for about forty years now, but fortunately God kept His big hand on my life All through those days, and my family was saved from possible damage, beautifully written dear Debi, blessings Roy

You did a great job sharing this personal story, Debi.
It was well organized and filled with such details that
only one who was there--you--could write. You described
your senior class and last day perfectly. I could see
everything you wrote. Some of it was funny, and some not
so funny. The lead up to the bar scenes set the stage well.
Of course, telling the seniors not to go to the bar made it
more of a reason to do just that. I believe Glen, though surprised,
wasn't as surprised as you thought. The fact he accepted
your bar encounter proved it to me. The politicians had no clue
what they were doing when they changed the drinking age to a
lower age. Was it coincidence, collusion with bars, or just plain
stupidity? I vote for all three. Now when you look back, things
are seen in a different light than what an 18-year-old would've seen
at the time. Keeping your grans uniformed was the best choice.
Thanks for sharing, Jan

Wow! That was tremendously stupid of the powers that be to change the drinking age that day. Myself, I love to drink, and my dad introduced me to alcohol when I was 14. This is a really nice look into your life. Thanks for sharing.

Hi Monica, you remind me of myself. My dad used to give me a glass of wine every night at seven yrs old cause I had some bad anemia.Still do!

You are just so sweet! When I was 14 we were going to a family reunion. I asked my dad, who had an ice chest full of beer and whiskey, when I could drink. He pulled into a convenience store, brought me inside, and told me to pick out what I wanted because if I was old enough to ask, I was old enough to drink. My cousins were SO jealous at that reunion because the ones older than me asked for beer and their parents said no. It was HILARIOUS!

You seem like you handled it well .MY familydrinks but nobody abuses so at 18
When we did it, & don't know why anyone was surprised,

It does sound like it was a memorable day. I bet you aren't the only one who looks back and scratches their heads as to why that was the date chosen. I month later might have made a big difference for many. I wonder how many showed up to graduation a bit hung over, and how many didn't show up at all. Interesting how it looked so fun at the time.
Thanks for sharing your experience and your insight.

This was quite a tale! It seems that eighteen might not be mature enough to handle alcohol. Thank you for sharing your story here. Best wishes to you.

Wow! I can easily understand why you chose to remember your 50th anniversary since graduating from high school. The following sentences poignantly summarize why THAT day was significant and what some of the repercussions were. Lowering the drinking age to 18 was stupid as several states learned.
And in just a few hours, we would never know each other in that way again.
Also, we had already lost six classmates to alcohol-related crashes by our five-year reunion.
