Simply beautiful, Jessica.
Resonates deeply with me...
I was fourteen years old in 1967, when I received the book A Cup of Sun: A Book of Poems by Joan Walsh Anglund. In it she wrote, "A bird does not sing because it has an answer; it sings because it has a song." (Now that quote has been ascribed to a number of people - even Oprah Winfrey, but my hat is tipped to Joan Walsh Anglund.) Regardless, your beautiful poem reminded me of that book - which I still own! Thank you for sharing your beautiful poem, and for my equally beautiful memory...
Your presentation, form, and images = stellar!

Diane, I cannot express how much your comment means. Your feedback is already appreciated, but when you mentioned Joan Walsh Anglund, I was overwhelmed. My grandmother had a collection of her books, and my siblings and I knew many of them by heart. I genuinely believe that those books ignited my passion for writing. "My Sister, My Friend," especially, will always hold a place in my heart. My grandmother read it to me until she gave it to me... I then enjoyed reading it to my little sister almost every night.
My grandmother passed years ago... Tragically, my little sister also passed away. That is why the mention of those books meant so much. Your words brought beautiful memories to me, as well.
Thank you, Xoxo
Jessica

well, that's a lovely thought.
It would be my guess that they are either singing to each other or to other birds, or, just for the pure joy of singing. But to sing to their host tree is, indeed a lovely idea, and who knows, maybe you're right. :)

They seem like very practical song birds, singing to tree that gives them shelter. That's sweet. Or weird, right? Although we now own a house but, I can't imagine if, when we were renting, we sang to our landlord. I'm getting stuck in analogies, lately. Some people have other problems, and my main problem, lately, is that I must make an analogy, any chance I get. I'm sorry to vere off. I think your poem was so simple and authentic.
Who or what would be more deserving of their serenade than the tree which provides their shelter and their ability to be safe and sound, and able to sing. The image and beautiful words all work together to create a very sweet poem. I enjoyed reading it. :)) Alex
