My cousin and I are both in our seventies and live in two different cities. Whenever we get together, we have grilled cheese sandwiches (the original three ingredient kind) doesn't get better than that. Enjoyed the history you included in this piece and the recipe ideas. Enjoy your lunch today.

I like the recognition of National Grilled Cheese Day. I've thought about using the National Day Calendar for prompts and I'm glad to see someone actually did.
Your suggestions on how to do a grilled cheese sound scrumptious. I personally like to use three slices of cheese: extra sharp cheddar, American and Swiss. I need to go make lunch now.
Thanks for sharing and for lunch inspiration.

Ha! Debi. Excellent review, thank you. I actually heard the National Grill Cheese day on TV weather.
You should get the calendar for prompts. Great idea?
John

Some days the calendar has one or two National Days. Some days there over a dozen. I send out the days to my family each morning. Today there are five holidays listed including,
National Scrabble Day
National Thomas Jefferson Day
National Peach Cobbler Day...
-
Yes. I saw National Scrabble day listed on the same weather? that?s what I do at 5:10am?

Interesting essay. I didn't know that grilled cheese was something from
Roman culture. I've had some great grilled cheeses; one in Wilmington I remember with goat and blue cheese, tomato, watercress and bacon on whole wheat. estory

I didn't eve3n know there was a National Grilled Cheese Sandwich Day. You make all those variations sound delicious. It's 11:30 here and I'm now yearning for a grilled cheese sandwich. I'll force myself to wait until tomorrow's lunch, though.

Thank you, Mary. Don?t forget the soup!

You are welcome. I'm not fond of tomato soup. When I was in college I got room and board from this lady and just about every meal was tomato soup. It didn't take long to get tired of that.
-
I can imagine that?

But a grilled cheese sandwich--yum!

While I didn't know today was National Grilled Cheese Day, I did make myself a grilled cheese sandwich. I used leftover Easter ham with provolone cheese and mustard. I actually get my cheese sliced thin solely for the making of grilled cheese. One version we like uses caramelized onions and mushrooms with mozzarella cheese or Cooper sharp. While my husband would love the mayo, it is one of those things I cannot stand. Even thinking about mayo grosses me out. Yuck. Thanks for sharing!

Yup, mayo can have that affect on people (it?s only raw egg and oil)!
I like your sandwich version. I may have to try it, especially with Cooper sharp cheddar.
Dang, now I want a grill cheese. Problem, it?s 3:15am.
Thank you for reading and sharing.

Hi John,
Thanks for sharing your recipe and thoughts on your national cheese day.
Who'd have thought it could be such a choice fest of ingredients.
If I were to counter I'd probably have to counter with an Aussie snag on the barbie. Ha, Ha.
Blessings

Cool post. Good work.
Ohmie would add a layer of baby marshmallows with kool-aid powder sprinkled on them - maybe a variety of flavors on the same sandwich.
Best wishes.

As LJ said, I believe you mean "you're" in the first tip.
That, however, doesn't take away from your piece at all! I didn't know there's a small clique of "foodies" on this site, my first encounter being the "Double Down" poem.
Happy Grilled Cheese Day!

Thank you for letting us know that today is National Grilled Cheese Day. That is certainly a day to celebrate. We just got a Grilled Cheese Restaurant in town. I haven't tried it yet. I will have to do that. I do like a good grilled cheese and tomato soup. It's a combination that's hard to beat. I enjoyed reading.
