I'm certainly enjoying reading about your jobs. I find it interesting that you preferred driving the school bus to substitute teaching. It's funny about the little girls liking to congregate in the restroom. Even some adult ladies have to have someone go with them to the ladies' room. I suppose you were right about getting the principal not to suspend the boy, but it was taking a chance. He could have gone on and maybe attacked someone, but as you said if he couldn't graduate he wouldn't have gone back to school. As for the boys packing into one car, I watched the old movie 'Grease," and that's exactly what they did. judi

In this case with the boy and the bat, we both were at a standoff and trying to save face. He really wasn't a bad boy. If he had been, I wouldn't have stood up for him.

I am thinking about doing some of my Greyhound days of how things were in the early sixties. Not sure I have the guts too like you. Kids can be a handful and so can college students on Greyhounds. Good One, Arkie.

I imagine you have other stories that could fill a fun
book on your experiences as a sub, Yvonne. The ones
you shared were great, and I could see each of them.
I agreed with the way boys handled disagreements than
girls. It's amazing the girl still looks at you the way she
did in high school. Some never grow up. I remember the
no child left behind. Of course, no one wanted to have that
child' the next year.
Thanks for sharing, Jan

I enjoyed this installment of stories about your jobs. I especially loved the line "Girls can hold a grudge into eternity." It's so true! Thank you for sharing, and best wishes to you.

I taught first grade for 22 years, 2 years kindergarten, 1 year second grade, and 1 year sixth grade science, for a total of 26 years. I hated 6th grade. I happen to love little boys, they are fun. Yes, little girls are sneaky. Thank you for sharing this with us. It's fun to read.

Thank you for sharing these tales - the car window one is perplexing. I guess the shop teacher didn't look too hard. Lol.
I am glad that you were able to be a blessing to all those kids and how great that you could defend as well as stand up to those kids.

It sounds like the students like to give the teachers the run around and being stuck in a class with them when they are not responding is a bit different to a bus journey where you can drop them off and be on your way. I used to teach aerobics at Aston University in Birmingham and I once had a couple of awkward students playing up at the back. I stopped the class and asked them to come to the front of the class so that they could see better, they immediately behaved themselves. You can't have these disruptions as it spoils it for everyone else. These students were paying for my classes too! I enjoyed your story Yvonne, thank you for sharing your experiences, love Dolly x

Oh yes this one took me back to my teaching days and I remember a few times when I wished I had been driving the school bus. But surprisingly, after I had finished teaching - my last job had been in a school for disruptive boys - one of the biggest problem lads in the school came back to see me and thank me for straightening him out so that he got his heart's desire and joined the army, where he seemed to be doing very well.

Thanks for sharing these words and stories Yvonne, my dear wife was a head teacher and faculty head for years, and for years after retirement she had nightmares about school. She taught in the roughest schools, but she was always a kind and gracious person, even after all thst, she has my admiration. Beautifully written Yvonne, blessings Roy
