This is a lovely fee style poem written about the beginning day out in the West. How beautiful it sounds with the pink sky of dawn changing colors to become the cerulean blue of day. There is a delightful simile where small, tumbling clouds are likened to "little boys told to sit still" and a wonderful verse describing the river and its waterfalls.
There is also an acknowledgement to the past presence of the First People. "Calcified Indians Stoically guarding stone tepees.".A beautiful poem. It ought to win . cheers Cass

Such a beautiful word painting, Verna! I loved all the alliteration, the colors of the words and the sounds that you conjured up as in "River in a deep gorge gurgles its way." I really liked the personification of the mesas, too! Best wishes in the contest!

Thank you, Verna! Two more days and we get to meet with the funeral home. Hoping they can do the burial before the end of the year.

I like your beautifully written free verse. The descriptions are what anchor the reader to the colorful landscape that your writing celebrates. I enjoyed this work very much. Good luck in the contest.

As always Verna, your poetry sings. This is masterful free verse with many memorable lines. I liked the play on "eye" and loved "boulder giants". "Downhill" is perhaps obvious. The "Villages of Rock" stanza is inspired and my favorite.
I quite enjoyed the read and wish you well.
Cheers,
John

Thank you, so much for this excellent review, John. A poet's favorite word is "inspired."
