This is very interesting and entertaining to read. I have always wanted to know the meaning of the phrase, in the nick of time and now I know a bit more about the origin. Thank you for this informative chapter in your book of idioms and their origins. I hope you get the end of this in the nick of time, haha.

Thanks for your review and comments. I love that expression, and I like the connection with the detectives who always arrive in the nick of time to foil the bad guys. Hope you are doing well. judi

I find myself using that expression all the time! I am doing better each day and I will continue to get better so that I can walk again!

Wow! Thanks for giving us such a thorough history of the "Nick of Time" and now we have many references even from Shakespeare to Nick Carter. You know so many radio and TV shows and you can apply your subject to any of those shows. Great job!

Thanks so much for your review and comments. I always think of that phrase when I watch those detective shows. It's like the cavalry arriving just in time in the movies. judi

Lol. I know what you mean. I think the writers do that intentionally to keep the viewers on the edge of their seats!

I like the way you connect to your readers in the first paragraph, then proceed to different meanings and origins. Next is its evolution into a name. You brought it up to date with TV detectives. Well done as usual, Judi.

Thanks so much for your review and comments. As you can tell, I'm spending a lot of time watching those old detective shows. I believe i saw those Nick Carter movies starring Walter Pigeon. Can't remember them all that well. judi

Hello Judi,
Well done on your post. I found it really informative. I had no idea where the phrase came from, though I'd used it multiple times. I found the nick sticks entertaining. I guess I've lived with my head in the clouds for so long, that I'm just now being exposed to a part of life I never knew about. I had heard of dime store novels, but I've never seen one. When I was a kid, comic books were twelve cents and I had a rather large collection of them. I wish I still had them. Hate to say it, but I never heard of Nick Carter either. However, if you'd mentioned Clark Kent, or Bruce Wayne, you'd have won the cupie doll. Thanks so much for sharing this interesting post.
Have a blessed evening.
Tom

Hi, Tom, and thank you so much for your review and comments. There are so many expressions we use and don't think about where they originated. I don't believe I mentioned it, but there were also Nick Carter comic books. I believe I saw some of those Nick Carter movies starring Walter Pigeon. judi

How interesting. Having watched do much British television, I knew about being in the nick, or being nicked. How many times have we all said something happened just in the nick of time!

Thanks so much for your review and comments. Isn't it interesting we have the Devil himself sometimes referred to as old Nick, and then there's the Christmasy St. Nick. judi

This was an interesting writing. I never thought about the origin of all these different sayings, but they all started somewhere. I enjoyed your story and I love the picture you added to it. I can remember when some books were 10 cents. Nice writing.

Thanks so much for your review and comments. The books also were called pulp fiction. Amazing to think you could by a book for 10 cents. judi

You did a great job, Judi, expressing your thoughts and feelings
about this idiom. It's evident you researched this well. Your info
was well-organized, smooth to read, and very interesting. I believed
this nick in time' is one that had adapted to many situations over time
in several countries. All of the examples made sense, and your research
was supportive.
Thanks for sharing, Jan

Thanks so much for your review and comments. Although nick is a British word for jail or being jailed, I had heard of it before. judi

Well, I have to say. I had never know this or though much about the popular phrase. I did read dime novellas. They were often found in old book stores or libraries. You don't see them anymore.

You did a great job with your research for this. Well done.

This article is informative and entertaining, your trademark, Judi. I had never associated the idiom "in the Nick of time" with Nick Carter even though that detective hero was popular as Iwas growing up. Rod
