A wonderful poem about the memories of childhood Roy, balanced against the emptiness of yards vacant of children... beautifully written with a lovely flow of rhythm and rhyme
Best wishes

Hello, Roy, I know what you mean. When I was a child, I played out in the street most of the day, and it was safe. Now days we hear stories of kidnapped kids, sometimes murdered. It's very scary. I miss those days too. Well done. As always, perfect rhyme and meter.

I remember how my neighbors growing up would watch out for us and vice versa. We knew each other. Roots grew together. Now, you're lucky if a neighbor waves when you drive by. I'm lucky to live in a small community. When you need help, someone always know someone. But not to the extent of the old days. Great feeling from this poem. Gretchen

What an excellent thing to remember. We lived in the country, so I felt safe, and we knew our neighbors and visited with them often. Now people are afraid. Here in the U.S., the husband of our Speaker of the House was attacked by a home invader and had his skull fractured. There have been threats on the lives of our Supreme Court Justices. If they aren't safe, it makes you wonder what about the rest of us. I watch some of the old TV shows and see people leaving their car doors unlocked. I wouldn't do that. Yes, things have definitely changed. Brilliant use of internal rhyme and excellent word choices. judi

The author's words made me think of when I was growing up and how
much life has changed. I pondered on the author's notes - as I thought about how much I miss the good old days! Life will continue to change and God will help us get through. Roy, hope you and the family are
doing well....Maria

-Thanks for sharing the image, notes, and poem, Roy.
-I agree with you about how many things have changed.
-I think a lot of people are just into themselves, and don't bother even if you contact them. You have a good image for that:
"with selfish thought they flirt."
-You have many good examples and effective rhyme, like
"Locked doors and higher fences now, are not so very kind."
-A good image with " a desert's icy throne."
-A good concluding verse with the repetition of the opening lines.
-Well done.

This is an absolutely beautiful poem. You maintain a nice meter and rhyme throughout, and there are so many wonderful images here: "monuments - a desert's icy throne." By the way, I agree with your sentiments. I barely know our neighbors, which is quite sad. Outstanding work.

Yes, Roy, most of the world has turned into such a dangerous place to be in. It's really sad. One reason why I love to live in this part of Spain, is that crime is almost unheard of. People still leave their front door unlocked overnight. I must say, I normally don't.
You've written yet another beautiful poem. Ulla:)))

It's so true we live in a different age, and we believe we grew up in the best one. Along with you, I enjoy the memories of caring neighbors and wish it were still so.

Hello, thank you for sharing your poem. It was a good idea to post it now in November, which is the time that makes plenty of us nostalgic. From time to time, it is great to have a pause and take a glance at our childhood years.
