That fine tale deserves six stars! Well done. The entire time I was reading it, I was thinking Johnny Cash should be singing it. Very reminiscent of "A Boy Named Sue". Very creative. Superb pacing and flow. I look forward to reading more of your works. Thanks for sharing.

very powerful and moving take on the legend of Sam Mc Gee. I like the tribute to the poet Robert Service and his poems about the Alaskan frontier. i went to Alaska on a cruise in 2019 the last of my 50 states, but I was not that impressed. A big Meh but I bought a book of Robert Service poems.

Thanks for the review, Jake. I went to Alaska once to check on the fishing boats that were owned by the company that I worked for.

This is a perfect example of how creative a poet can be with a prompt like this.
This is a strong contest entry.
You were successful at telling a complete story using poetic techniques and formatting.
I appreciate the theme and how your descriptive writing was not only intriguing but kept me engaged throughout.
Thank you for sharing me good luck in the contest.

Great story/poem. I enjoyed your writing. Poor old Sam McGee. I wonder if this is factual or fiction? Whatever, you made a fist of the story. My grandfather was a miner of gold back in 1890 but the climate was the opposite. Our heat would cook an egg on your car hood in 2 mins! Well done my friend, good luck in the contest. K xx

I don't know who Sam McGee is but the poetic story you spun was truly engaging. It was honestly quite lyrical. I liked the rhyming and the tale that was interwoven. Wonderfully done. Gretchen

I have no idea who Robert Service is, but I love this poem. As I read it out loud, it came out as if a bluegrass song - the rhyming and flowing of the words were wonderful.
You certainly do share a story in a poem, and this will be a very good entry into this contest.
Best of luck,
Pam

I had to look up some information about the real Sam Mcgee, and discovered he really did exist, but the poem is a little on the fictional side, the original at least. And your poem was similar with the use of internal thyme, (I love internal rhyme) it gives great rhythm to poetry, you wrote it really well, good job Paul, blessings Roy

Thanks, Roy. The Sam McGee that I refer to is the fictional character in Robert Service's poem.

You did a fantastic job on this long, tall tale. I really enjoyed the linear presentation that allowed for a quick read... it made the length of the piece a non issue. Well done on all points, Paul. Good luck.

Absolutely wonderful! Robert Service is one of my favorites, or maybe THE favorite. I have all his works. You did a wonderful job recreating his style. Good meter and rhyme while clearing up the story of Sam McGee. My favorite line in the original poem is "a promise made is a debt unpaid."
